hey guys,

Broughton Vs Duffield

addvantages and dissadvantages of the the 2? who would you prefer?

Talisman

I really like Broughton & I love to pick him, but I find it hard to justify picking a bloke who's missed 14 games over the past 2 seasons (7 games each season) - now that is a huge number of games (essentially 1 third of the season) for any of you players to be missing, & especially for one of your premiums, who will set you back $479,800. Duffield saves you $38,300 - that is significant.

I must admit his average of 98.6 (you must pause & reflect on how amazing it is that the guys has played exactly the same number of games in his 2 years & scored only 1 point different, for the same average when rounded - freakish stuff!!!) is hugely tempting. As is the thought of what he could do with an injury-free year - what a fantastic premium defender he would make.

But when you contrast Broughton missing 14 games in the last 2 years to Duffield having only missing 1 game in that same 2 years, the decision starts to take shape. Also, don't forget that Duffield's scores are more than handy (averaging 97.4 in 2009 & 90.7 in 2010), and he could do even better this year, considering the number of injuries Freo have been ravaged by - with the recruitment of Mzungu & Faullks down back & midfielders (eg. Barlow, Ibbotson) missing injured - Duffield could spend a lot of this year roaming through the midfield, when he's not driving off half-back. Also, Barlow might not take as many points off him this season, with the possibility that his effectiveness could be blunted 3 ways: 1. 2nd year blues; 2. Coming off horrific fractured leg; 3. Likely to start copping the opposition's number 1 tag/increased attention when fit & firing again.

My last thought is that you must consider the balance of your back-line. For example, I have Adcock & Otten - who I believe represent excellent value for money - however, both have injury concerns. Therefore, I am less likely to want to take a gamble on another player with possible injury concerns such as Broughton as my 4th premium defender.

Anyway, just thoughts - hope some of them might help you in your decision-making process! Cheers!!

(Please note, at no stage did I say Broughton was/is injury prone, but you cannot over look missing a third of games in each of the last 2 seasons)

Whoops - please discount the numbers I referenced in regards to cost of Broughton & Duffield & their last 2 seasons' scores - I was in Super Coach-mode!! :)

But the facts stand regarding games missed/played, Duffield being a $$ saver (smaller diff, but still a saving), and balance of your back-line.

I think the games on Sunday arvo indicated the better of these 2.
Broughton seems to still rack it up whilst Mzungu has slotted into Duffys old spot n has kick in duties, whereas Duffield seems to have taken a midfield role whilst Barlow is recovering which looks to be detrimental to his DT scores

Bluke

Gotta agree with Browny about Duff man. There is not guarentee that Duffman with find as much of the ball when shifted into the midfield. He used to score alot of points from kick ins and marks deep in defence.

My money is on Broughton, yes he is a risk, but a risk i'm willing to take.

Risk v reward.

No body thought Chaps would play 21 games last year, but he did.

Mish

decisions decisions decisions, but i think i will take the risk of injuiry prone broughton.

thanks for that guys...

His had one injury........That to me doesn't scream INJURY PRONE.

Stop "Playing safe," and pick him. Like his not a safe pick in the first place. ;)

He had 2 injuries. First he injured his foot then the week he was due to come back he did his hammy from memory.

Mish

from the results of the poll so far, it seems that a lot of people are willing to take the risk.

thatguy

if the dockers played 22 games in Perth i would be on duffield. away from home his numbers are terrible!
