If you get it right it can be great.... but you also need luck with your other top shelf players!

i too started with the 3 starting rookies last year (neither were the 2 melbourne boys) and in the 3rd rd i was sitting 11th overall BUT it was the high priced players that fell down with injurys etc that slowly pushed me out and by the end was just inside the top 5000.

Point being that yes it could and will work great but the players that you pick up in the other possies need to keep playing.... which is all luck as you can't for see random injurys.

as others have said its fine balance as it only takes a few rds to fall quickly and that is because of the other players who have  a 4gun - 5gun mid. Big balancing act but trade right and at the right time and have luck with the other players there is no reason why you can't being sitting inside the top 100 with 3 starting rookies

i will do the same this year aswell.

Woops, just realised i was in the DT section... was 11th over all in SC but my point remains the same never the less

Coaches who went with this strategy last year made slow starts to the season but did come home strong. The majority of which ended up with a 5-8k rating.
The trouble is by the time you upgrade your rookies and grab your jets you have set yourself too far behind the pack to make an assault at the top 1000.

I think the slow start is a good point. I ended up with a rating of around 300 with a 3 starting rookie strat but I was pretty luck with injuries considering what others had. I did do a rather bad job in my tradings (which those that had read my stuff would know about) but yes a slow start but don't for get, that extra cash, or possibly extra trade/Better bench option can make a difference. I had still had Scully as my 7th mid that came in really handy at the end of the season when all the injuries/resting hit.

As said earlier, if you going 3 starting mids, you have to (in my opinion) have to go top, top shelf on the other 3! That was my error last year. As good as a year as Mitch had, he wasn't at the top top end, and it cost me!
I also started Goddard in the Mids (for duel positioning) but that was a mistake (last year, am considering it this year as well!)

I did a similar strategy last season (5 starting mids instead of 3).  After round 2 I was ranked 1,781 but then the following week they all failed on the DT scoreboard and I scored my lowest ever DT round score (1,672).  Its definitely a roller coaster ride for the year.

Have a read of my breakdown

Holz

for me 3 starting rookies will not work this year for ranking because of the byes, having a premium out will really hurt if you have to start 4 rounds and if you have a multi round and too players miss e.g boyd and a stkilda midfielder than starting 5 rookies in the mid will kill you that week. Im starting 1 in the back, 2 in the mid and 1 in the forward. So even in my worst round the stkilda bulldog one i shoiuld only be playing about 7 rookies

elephants

thinking i will go with two after going 6 last year ;D

I'm convinced Holzman, I'll be starting 1 rookie at the back, 2 at the mid and 1 foward. If your playing for overall, that score will also push well for league winning. There are heaps of juicy mid-range midfielders who can potential be premium material. I have my eye on a few but no point saying who till the pre-season kicks off. Cheers everyone!

Cicjose

i believe i have the risk / reward covered.

Barring long term injuries to my players in the first 5 rounds and if my players to play well consistently i think i am going to be well placed.

Cicjose, may I ask what your mid looks like? I'm intrigued

while the mids is where u can make the most money
its also where u can leak the most points...

I think the 3 rookie midfield approach will be quite common this year.

Will be intrigued to see how CJ goes with 4...

also, by picking 3 rookies and 3 premiums you're missing out on the potential of those mid-pricers.. especially anthony

anthony a mid pricer? I'd say theres better def of a mid pricer but his shoulders... hmm. I think starting 3 rookies is trouble personally. 2 yes. 3? bit much. I don't think it'll work this year. Scully Trengove Martin bastinac etc were all so mega solid for a first yr compared to most. As always we'll see in the preseason but like meatloaf says, 2 out of 3 aint bad (ie. 6 out of 9 being rookies) :)

another thing that came to my mind is that if ur going for overall, when the multi-bye comes around, and u happen 2 have 2 of ur premium midfielders in that catagorey, bye bye 100-150 pts straight away

Spite

I went with 4 starting rookies last season to go with ablett and bartel.
First round I scored 2056. By round 5, I was coming 113th.

I wouldn't do it again because of the midfielders this year, but if anyone wants to risk it, the most you can do (the riskiest) that is viable is a premium, premium, anthony, rookx3...

Its only 4 because he has GAJ on the bench if I have read correctly?

I am not sure about the 3 rookie starts as there are a couple of good mid priced players that should/could turn into keepers. Anthony, ROK, Jack, or even a risky Shuey seem a better choice to me along with 3 premiums then rookies.

I don't count any of them as good starters - time will tell ...
