sorry havent looked at the rules but is it telomere??
as in telomeric dna? which keeps getting shorter and shorter as you age.. and is the reason you die.

Justin Bieber

Haven't even heard of that ::).

Dang BS and his Biology :P.

McRooster

BS has it  8)

A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. There is belief in research that I've read that by manipulating these 'telomeres' we could one day find the fountain of youth.
If you think of a telomere as like the bit of plastic on the end of your shoe lace and how that begins to fray and brek over time, think of what we could achieve if someone could stop that from breaking down  ;)

Over to you BS  ;D

yep roost is correct.. if we can stop these telomeres from depleting.. we can live forever.. hmm HP do you wanna take over for me cause im not gonna be on much..

Justin Bieber

Sorry BS, I gotta get off soon also. Gotta get up early tommorrow for a trip to Windy Hill :D.

If anyone's interested check out Nobel prize winner Proffesor Elizabeth Blackburn's work  8)

is telomeric dna also used for dna fingerprinting? I just remember it uses short tandem repeats.. ahh.. good times in biology class last year :D

CrowsFan

Telomere! Of course! Great choice in word roost ;)

I'm familiar with Blackburn's work only through the various Cancer councils I champion for and the belief by some in those oragnisations that this could be where we could channel some of our fund raising.
I started out in Pharmacy but soon took a different path, I'm secretly hoping that one of you fine people in here can map that path towards cure that I did not end up taking.
CF, BS and others - just believe you can and you will. Anyone out there who complains about students getting this and getting that and having to foot the bill for HECS then go remove your own thyroid and see if you still have a pulse. We need people like CF and BS and others.

dont worry roost.. im doing year 12 this year and planning to do pharmacy or some sort of health science in uni..
im practically in cause of good results from the last 2 years just need good results this year too :D

CrowsFan

Health Science is a great course BS, that is what I am currently doing up in Sydney :)
Gives you so many options once you have finished on what you want to focus on after. There are so many different ways to go that I still have no clue whether to go into the treatment side or research side after...
Oh and thanks for the support Roost :) If I end up contributing half as much as you do with all you differing councils then I will be extremely proud of myself

it works a little differently in Vic..
at melb uni you have to do a general biomed course then it seperates into its specific areas.. but that takes too long.. ie at least 7-8 years

at monash. i can get straight into pharmacy or med and that only takes 4-5 years..

OR i might go UNSW if they give me scholarship :D

CrowsFan

At USYD you do a 3 year bachelor in health sciences then if you have gotten good enough results you get offered a place in a 2 years masters degree for heaps of different courses such as physiotherapy, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, orthoptics, etc or you can then go and do medical science/medicine/pretty much anything

BoredSaint

ok i see.. so basically you can not get the best results in year 12 and still go on to do med or something..

here in VIC you have to get a really good mark to do health science courses.. hopefully i get good enough..
