Medical room: Midfielder Travis Boak will be eased back into full training after the break after having his appendix removed, while Jacob Surjan (knee) will also remain on a modified program. David Rodan is progressing well in his recovery from knee surgery and is on track to return to full training in mid-February. Brett Ebert (knee) will progress to full-contact drills by mid-January, as will Cameron Hitchcock (shoulder) and Daniel Stewart (shoulder). Andrew Moore (adductor) and Simon Phillips (shoulder) are also recovering from minor surgery.

Who's burning: Jarrad Redden started the pre-season behind veteran Dean Brogan and three-gamer Matthew Lobbe in the ruck pecking order at Alberton, but has pressed his claim for an unlikely round one berth with a blistering two months of training. The 20-year-old's strength testing and skin folds have reflected a significant improvement in lean muscle mass and he's been 'killing it' on the track, according to teammate Jackson Trengove.

Draftee watch: Most draftees would be content with just getting through their first training session at a new club but first-round draft pick Ben Jacobs used the opportunity to showcase his revered skills, kicking on his non-preferred right foot for much of the hour-long workout. He wasted no time making an impression off the field either, pretending to not know who Warren Tredrea was in a radio interview with the former Power champion shortly after being drafted.

Peter Rohde today said Ebert was in the mix for rnd1 of the NAB and was a likely starter for the season after his succesful LARS surgery. Rodan was a little further behind Ebert having done it  a bit later but looked set for an early return.

Cruel hamstring blow for Port Adelaide's Hamish Hartlett
Source: Herald Sun dated 24 Jan 2011

PROMISING Port Adelaide midfielder Hamish Hartlett's pre-season has again been derailed by a hamstring injury.

Hartlett, rated a potential star, was restricted to just four games last year by hamstring injuries which initially flared last pre-season.

The 20-year-old strained his right hamstring at training today, a club spokesman said.

Hartlett will have scans but is expected to miss the next three weeks of training.

The classy onballer has suffered a series of soft tissue leg injuries since being recruited with Port's No.4 pick in the 2008 national draft, managing just 15 games for the club.

The news has soured reports David Rodan is set to make another remarkable comeback and play against Collingwood in Round 1 after a second LARS knee operation.

The Port Adelaide midfielder needed a second round of knee surgery after the artificial ligament used in his original operation failed in November.

Rodan completed an amazing comeback after his original operation in December 2009, returning to the field in just 16 weeks and playing 19 games last season.

His comeback Mark II could be even quicker.

Port football manager Peter Rohde said today Rodan may not miss any home-and-away matches.

"We haven’t set a return date for David, but we’re thinking it’ll be early in the season, if not Round 1," Rohde told the AFL website.

"He’s back running and is looking and feeling really good, so … so far so good."

Rhode said Rodan, defender Jacob Surjan (knee) and mature-age recruit Simon Phillips (shoulder) were the only Port players unavailable for the NAB Cup. Hartlett has since been added to that list.

He said the club would take a cautious approach with star midfielder Travis Boak, who is recovering after having his appendix removed.
