Amla & Ponting are quite clearly the best...
Gautam Gambhir? An opener but could bat at 3 I suppose...3000 test runs, average of 50.

HH< Trott is a great example of a #3 batsman. 14 tests 1400 runs with  4/4 = 100/50, 60 average .  9 ODI games for 569 runs, 70 average at 1/4 = 100/50.

He has 10k FC runs, 22/51 100/50 and a 44.44 average.
