The problem with a relegation/promotion system is that the AFL is a regulated and heavily managed product. It isn't an open system like soccer.

Being a regulated competition conflicts entirely with an open competition which a relegation/promotion system requires. You would in fact end up with a very unbalanced competition where you would have the rich clubs basically finishing at the top always. Like the premier league this isn't necessarily a bad thing as fans measure a clubs success relative to their wealth however it isn't something that most AFL fans would like. Finals really wouldn't work either.

You are completly right hawk_88 it won't happen under the authoritatrian set-up of the AFL but just take reality out of it for a minute and think of how cool it would be.

Most of our clubs have been botton at some stage but I love the idea instead of getting Judd, Kruezer, Murphy & Gibbs Carlton are replaced by North Horbart FC in the AFL.

Another problem is you would need to make 16 ( or more ) new clubs, as all the teams in the State Leagues are B Teams, which means when a B Team Promotes and your A Team Demotes you switch your players around.

Also, the best players need to play in the best league, and if a team with 3 or 4 good players demotes, they'll all have to move.

Is it me or do you have the feeling that they are going to combine all the State Leagues and make a pretty much B-League???
It seems the AFL is in the infancy stages of this  ;)
Let's see how the new league for Brisbane's reserves pans out. If successful we may begin to see a more national roll-out?

Of course there was once the reserves which has been flagged as being potentially reintroduced. This makes more sense to me than a B-Level comp because there is already the fan base for the current clubs that would filter down. A B-Level comp would have to take clubs from each of the existing state leagues which in itself would be problematic but more of a problem because state league teams have relatively small  supporter bases and for the AFL to run an interstate competition it would have to either generate money or have a positive impact on the major AFL league.

The northern league makes sense as a higher quality second level league is more likely to generate a level of awareness about the game and develop and draw through more talent in a part of Australia that is still League (as in Rugby) heartland.

Great idea to further showcase talent

no its just you.
I like the idea, but really why would teams waste energy on playing this when they could be preparing?

because if they idea sells and grows, then one day it's a NATIONAL b league they'd rather be preparing for
