Just my second year at DT.  Been playing around with some names and this team scrapes in just under budget.  I guess at this stage it's a pretty standard team but please feel free to give me your thoughts/rating.

Backs: Goddard, Hodge, Lake, Deledio, Otten, Heppell, Jacobs (Mzungu, Richardson, Toy)

Mids: Swan, Boyd, J. Selwood, Foley, D. Swallow, Gaff (Polec, Krakouer, Weller)

Rucks: Sandilands, Jolly (Smith, Pederson)

Forwards: Chapman, Franklin, Didak, Riewoldt, Petterd, Petrie, Prestia (Matera, Darling, Callinan)

Obviously prices are only a guide, as are the bench/rookie players but I've tried to keep in mind the byes and also the fact that teams are taking mature age players for a reason.  That is to play and not make up numbers on the list.

Callinan? Penderson? Weller?

As I said, the bench is obviously going to change after the pre-season but I think all three will play games this year, hopefully enough to make a few $$$.

Who this Mzungu guy, will he play?

Mature age recruit from the Perth Football Club who in the WAFL hasn't had any trouble getting possesions.  Runs all day & seems to be doing everything right in the pre-season with Freo so far.  Will wait & see how he goes in the pre-season games but may get his chance in the season proper, as over the past couple of years Harvey has taken a liking to the more mature players.

Weller is definitely one to watch, he might get a lot of games and should score very well for his price. Remember you won't find out GC's starting team until Round 2, though. Don't know anything about the other two.

Your team is very similar to my plan team, though I can't accuse you of copying me since I haven't actually posted my team anywhere, and won't until after the season begins. It looks like we have taken a very similar approach - picking a team that should make covering for byes fairly easy, and not picking any speculative midpricers. For that reason I guess I can't really fault your team. :P

Just noticed both Callinan and Pederson are mature agers who should be minimum priced. Both sound pretty tempting, will watch carefully in NAB Cup.  ;D

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Not sure I'm sold on Nathan Foley either in the midfield, will have to wait & see how he goes during the pre-season games.  The wraps on D. Swallow are huge and if he lives up to expectations could stay in the team for the whole year, much like Barlow looked like doing last year until injured.  If that's the case he could take the place of Foley (similar price), which would then allow for the selection of another rookie midfielder.

Seems to be a growing trend of staying away from mid pricers. Why? Too much risk in trying to pick the break out?

I don't pick speculative midpricers (ie. midpricers that aren't discounted) because the chance of them being a good keeper is very low. You eventually have to trade most of them out with little value gain before finals because they aren't producing keeper-worthy scores, which is pretty wasteful. To put it another way, for the price of two midpricers you can get a premium and a rookie/cheapie, which will generally give you higher scores, more value gain and one likely keeper instead of two very unlikely keepers.

Also, as the starting team of TAGers proves, picking non-discounted players who have breakout seasons isn't what wins you Dream Team. The real (non-discounted) breakouts last year were Dale Thomas, Richard Douglas, Michael Rischitelli and Kieren Jack, and TAGers had none of them.

The only non-discounted midpricer in my plan team is Scott Selwood. He's the only one I can think of who probably has a better than 50/50 chance of being a good keeper.
