Summary:

Once touted as a future skipper of Essendon, Mark McVeigh has had some struggles of late. He has missed 23 matches over the last 3 years, however only 4 last year. Under Matthew Knights, McVeigh changed from a midfield rotation type player, to a tagging/half-back defender. As you'd expect his fantasy output has decreased. He averaged in the 90s for 2007 and 2008, before averaging 64.4 in 2009 and 70.4 in 2010.

2010 saw him average a tad under 15 disposals per match, and only two centuries (back-to-back in rounds 11 and 12). Former team mate and now coach James Hird has indicated he may put McVeigh back in the midfield rotation.

Hird to put McVeigh back in the middle?

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $374,100

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $356,200

Position: MID/DEF or MID

I agree with the fanplanner's assessment of him being a MID/DEF, though it wouldn't surprise me if he remained a MID. McVeigh turns 30 early in the new year, and it maybe a bit much to expect him to improve (fantasy wise) significantly. However, it wasn't that long ago he was averaging in the 90s.

Decision:

Touch-and-go. I like McVeigh as a player, and MPP does make he a little tempting, but not sure if I can squeeze him with that awkward price.

Stole my thunder Ossie ;) McVeigh brothers in two days...

Unlikely for me, his age and his role combined with that awkward price makes it hard to choose him.

Hope he does manage to play the majority of games though next season.

Junktimer

no way, he is at a terrible price.  he showed this year that he is finished as well.

Boomz

He's done and dusted I was mad when we gave him a 2 year deal and will never pick him.

MajorLazer

Don't worry BOOMZ. It's just Essendon. :P

Boomz

I sometimes think that  ::) We've made so many flowered decisions in the last 2-3 years & theres only so many that can be blamed on Knightmare.

MajorLazer

Yer, but what happens if the same happens under Hird?

Boomz

Then I for one will be just as mad as I was when knights was there. Never wanted Hird. Love him but not as coach...Would also be the end of half the board. Need a fresh start but new coaches don't turn shower players good. The players needed to go too.

MajorLazer

I don't think it was the right decision either.

Boomz

yeah I would have been a bit happier if he had came in and culled the list but they seem to really believe they can turn these players around...

Junktimer

BOOMZ who would you have liked to have seen as coach, surely not the Knightmare?

Boomz

No I hated his guts. Wanted Alan Richardson... Best assistant going around only a matter of time before he gets a top job.
