Summary:

Recently named the Crows Captain, Van Berlo has some strong shoes to fill. Following on from some of the best footballers (actual and fantasy) going on in Simon Goodwin and Mark Ricciuto, can Van Berlo step up a gear with the added responsibility? Nick Maxwell, Jobe Watson, Tom Harley, Dom Cassisi and Chris Newman are all recent examples of Captains whose performance increase has coincided with the Captaincy.

However, looking at his stats, Van Berlo has been consistently scoring between 77-84 for the last 4 years. 2010 was no different, and although he is consistent, has not set the world on fire. He started 2010 shaky, averaging 59 for his first 5 matches (he missed rounds 2-4), but since then he averaged a respectable 84.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $411,200

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $391,500

Position: MID

Adelaide have lost a lot of experience with the departures of Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards, Andrew McLeod, Brett Burton and Nathan Bock. But the truth is all of those missed a fair chunk of 2010 anyway. It has been left to Van Berlo to lead the team, but I can not see him doing anything other than more of the same (which in real football sense, is a very good contribution).

Decision:

Touch and go. I'm still after a unique pick for my side, and depending which way the moon shines, I may be tempted if he impresses me in the preseason. He is an awkward price range, and I'd be probably more likely to take a punt on Scott Thompson, himself recently given leadership responsibilities, who has a far better fantasy record.

Fletch74

Unlikely for me. The price tag is too awkward for me. I agree he could be a unique, but I don't think I will be picking the new Crows captain next season

Junktimer

being the crows captain you know he will play provided he's fit, he will also take on more responsibility.  But he has never been a proven scorer and he has a terrible price tag.

Very unlikely for me.

MiGZ

I was verry close to picking this bloke at the start of 2009. In the the second half of the 2008 season he absolutely blitzed it in a few games, racked up 40 touches in one game and had 132 and 140 dt back to back. He definately has the ability to bump his average up, perhaps into the mid 90's. Theres going to be at least 1 player in that crows midfield, if not not 2 who make a massive step up for the loss of goodwin, mcleod and edwards...its just knowing which one to pick?

Boomz

Agree with MiGZ but I'd still be more inclined to pick Thompson...

Justin Bieber

Unlikely for me. Will more likely take a stab at Brodie Smith in the midfield as he's a rookie who I've heard good things about. Should be room to fit him in :).

He will certainly be unique but I'd lean to a unique premium for my liking.

I always feel that at the end of the season ur mids should average around or over 97-8 and maybe 1 or 2 max at 90.  I feel that he might not get to 90 thats why i say no but i could easily be wrong.  Id personally go Vince over him
