Overall ranking vs League win strategies

There seem to be two dominant strategies for fantasy AFL - League wins vs Overall ranking.

Seems a lot of people don't feel there is much chance of taking out the overall win so they focus on winning their league for various reasons (beating their mates, cash leagues, etc).

I would have thought you can have a focus on both but possibly damage your chances with either, due to not 'specialising' one way or the other.

Given my pre-disposition at wanting to be a good 'all-rounder' in most things, I'd like to think that I can build a decent team to win a league or two as well as do well in the overall rankings.

What are people’s thoughts on this??

You should always plan your team to start with to win the damn thing overall

you should go for overall and the league will come if you do a good job. The people who go for league only have a slight advantage but i find building your team for a high overall puts you i good stead as you will probably finish top 4. I go for ranking and i normally end up beating all my friends in the league who only do league

I couldn't agree more, Holzman.  For a top 500 ranking you have to hit the ground running and maintain the pace.  Less reliance on "spec" rookies, more on proven players heavily discounted.  If your team is well managed and performs to its ability the league wins will come as a bonus.

I guess the main difference is, if you are going to forget the overall and go for leagues then you can focus on the no league game rounds 4,5,6 and pick guys around that. It also allows you to be a little more speculative regading rookies, as you have the ability to hang onto them and the trades for the final few rounds.

I know my dream team don't perform overall very well but with the research last year i averaged 1980 (a personal best and had a decent start 2050 in round 1)

Just a tad over me :P. 1976 if I can remember anything.

I try to go for both but never get any close either way.

Last year for me DT was ALL ABOUT WINNING THE LEAGUE! 
For the previous two years I had finished bridesmaid in my main league GF  :'( but got up for the win in my third year  ;D
In my second year I finished fractionally outside the top 1000 but in my angst to win the league in my third year I finished mid 5000's.
If you are going to go for the car, forget your league (especially as we start rnd 1 next year) focus on the prize and stick to your plan.
If you're going for the league win make sure you get in the ear of your rivals, force their hand, comment in the coaches box and most of all....stay premium  ;)
This year for me will be about helping others as I have achieved the Holy Grail of a League Win in my main league (won another in year 2, but not my main one) and not going for overall as I already drive a Prado.
This year is about fun and setting up for next year when play returns to normal (ie. no bye rounds)
2012 and I might want to sell my Prado to make room in the driveway  ;)

Truth is though a lot of people drive Toyota's, not many win a DT league  ;)

I agree with mcrooster, if you go for ranking than you need to go all out for it and if your really lucky like i was this year you can still win it even if your going for ranking.

Finding  the balance between chasing the overall win and league wins difficult this year with the byes.

For example, my preferred fwd line of the moment would be something like:

Chapman    Franklin    Riewoldt    Thomas    Pavlich    Petterd    rookie

problem with that fwd line in chasing the overall is that i'm gonna get killed in Rd 6 (league game bye but still counting towards overall ranking) where I'd have to cover Chapman, Franklin and Pavlich with their respective teams all having a bye in Rd 6 - I doubt my bench cover rookies will all be playing that round or if there is an inj or omission for Roo, Thomas, Petterd or my rookie on the field, i'll be doughnuting it.

also trying to spread the balance of players from different teams (in particular in the same lines eg Montagna, Hayes, Dal Santo in St Kilda midfield), means I might have to miss out on good players from strong teams cos of byes ...

Might have to give up the overall win aim this year but pick it back up in 2012 when GWS entry should take away the need for byes??

rounds 4, 5, 6 will be the key to maintain your good start or improve on bad start. you certainly don't want to be wasting trade in these weeks, so having a solid team at rnd 3 will be ultra important.

i had the same issues mid and forward (different rounds) so dropped one of the two or three and make them an upgrade target
