Thought this would be interesting....

2000 - 2009 AFL Drafts Top 10 picks, with the benefit of hindsight, who would you guys have picked at #1 from the top 10 picks that actually happened? Below are the top 10 picks from each year.

2000

1. Nick Riewoldt (St. Kilda)
2. Justin Koschitzke (St. Kilda)
3. Alan Didak (Collingwood)
4. Luke Livingston (Carlton)
5. Andrew McDougal (West Coast)
6. Dylan Smith (Kangaroos)
7. Laurence Angwin (Adelaide)
8. Daniel Motlop (Kangaroos)
9. Kayne Pettiifer (Richmond)
10. Jordan McMahon (Bulldogs)

Quite a few duds in that top 10! Would think Riewoldt still clearly the best pick, though Dids would probably overtake Koz now. Luke Livingston? Well done Carlton.

2001

1. Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)
2. Luke Ball (St. Kilda)
3. Chris Judd (West Coast)
4. Graham Polak (Fremantle)
5. Xavier Clarke (St. Kilda)
6. Ashley Sampi (West Coast)
7. David Hale (Kangaroos)
8. Jimmy Bartel (Geelong)
9. Luke Molan (Melbourne)
10. Sam Power (Bulldogs)

I love Hodgey, but you'd still have to give it to Judd in hindsight... Hodge #2, Bartel #3 and Ball #4.

2002

1. Brendon Goddard (St. Kilda)
2. Daniel Wells (Kangaroos)
3. Jared Brennan (Brisbane)
4. Tim Walsh (Bulldogs)
5. Jarrad McVeigh (Sydney)
6. Steven Salopek (Port Adelaide)
7. Andrew Mackie (Geelong)
8. Luke Brennan (Hawthorn)
9. Hamish McIntosh (Kangaroos)
10. Jaosn Laycock (Essendon)

Clearly still Goddard the best pick of those 10.... Fight for number 2 is interesting, probably between McIntosh and McVeigh

2003

1. Adam Cooney (Bulldogs)
2. Andrew Walker (Carlton)
3. Colin Sylvia (Melbourne)
4. Farren Ray (Bulldogs)
5. Brock McLean (Melbourne)
6. Kepler Bradley (Essendon)
7. Kane Tenace (Geelong)
8. Raphael Clarke (St. Kilda)
9. David Trotter (Kangaroos)
10. Ryley Dunn (Fremantle)

Ewww... not a great selection Yeah, clearly Cooney from that was the right choice :) Maybe Sylvia at #2?

2004

1. Brett Deledio (Richmond)
2. Jarryd Roughead (Hawthorn)
3. Ryan Griffen (Bulldogs)
4. Richard Tambling (Richmond)
5. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn)
6. Tom Williams (Bulldogs)
7. Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn)
8. John Meesen (Adelaide)
9. Jordan Russell (Carlton)
10. Chris Egan (Collingwood)

As much as I like Lids, surely people would choose Buddy :)

Imagine a Richmond forward line with Franklin and Riewoldt jnr?

2005

1. Marc Murphy (Carlton)
2. Dale Thomas (Collingwood)
3. Xavier Ellis (Hawthorn)
4. Josh Kennedy (Carlton)
5. Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)
6. Beau Dowler (Hawthorn)
7. Patrick Ryder (Essendon)
8. Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls (Richmond)
9. Mitchell Clark (Brisbane)
10. Marcus Drum (Fremantle)

A bit of a battle in this one. But Pendlebury is the only All-Australian out of this lot, and also has a Norm Smith medal to his name, and although I rate Marc Murphy as a midfielder and will likely be All-Australian one day... he isn't just yet. So Pendles for the win.

2006

1. Bryce Gibbs (Carlton)
2. Scott Gumbleton (Essendon)
3. Lachlan Hansen (North Melbourne)
4. Matthew Leuenberger (Brisbane)
5. Travis Boak (Port Adelaide)
6. Mitchell Thorp (Hawthorn)
7. Joel Selwood (Geelong)
8. Ben Reid (Collingwood)
9. David Armitage (St. Kilda)
10. Nathan Brown (Collingwood)

Joel Selwood 1st, daylight 2nd. Much to Cruiseon's displeasure, will put Gibbs at #2 only marginally ahead of Collingwood's premiership defender duo in Reid and Brown.

2007

1. Matthew Kreuzer (Carlton)
2. Trent Cotchin (Richmond)
3. Chris Masten (West Coast)
4. Cale Morton (Melbourne)
5. Jarrad Grant (Bulldogs)
6. David Myers (Essendon)
7. Rhys Palmer (Fremantle)
8. Lachlan Henderson (Brisbane)
9. Ben McEvoy (St. Kilda)
10. Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide)

This is a tough one! I still feel Cotchin will be the best of all of them, but has yet to get his body right. For me, it is between Kreuzer and Dangerfield, but I'll please the Carlton fans and give it to Krueze.

2008

1. Jack Watts (Melbourne)
2. Nic Naitanui (West Coast)
3. Stephen Hill (Fremantle)
4. Hamish Hartlett (Port Adelaide)
5. Michael Hurley (Essendon)
6. Chris Yarran (Carlton)
7. Daniel Rich (Brisbane)
8. Tyrone Vickery (Richmond)
9. Jack Ziebell (North Melbourne)
10. Phil Davis (Adelaide)

Again, a very tough one :) I'm going to give it to Nic-Nat marginally ahead of Hurley. If I included the top 11 though I'd consider Steele Sidebottom :)

2009

1. Tom Scully (Melbourne)
2. Jack Trengove (Melbourne)
3. Dustin Martin (Richmond)
4. Anthony Morabito (Fremantle)
5. Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne)
6. Gary Rohan (Sydney)
7. Brad Sheppard (West Coast)
8. John Butcher (Port Adelaide)
9. Andrew Moore (Port Adelaide)
10. Jake Melksham (Essendon)

As good as Scully and Trengove will be, Martin was the most impressive in 2010 with Richmond finally getting their act together in draft selections.

Master Q

Agree with all of your decisions Ossie, except 2004 Dilds and Buddy are even, and I think Richmond made the right choice as they didn't need a key forward.

2005, Marc Murphy and Pendles are great player, I give it to Pendlebury, but Murphy is still a A grade player IMO.

hawk_88

Pretty much spot on, no issues with the number 1's, might have slight different numbers 3's for a couple but eh.

Two interesting points:
1.) What happens if you expand it to the entire draft. I think there might be a few different number 1s.
2.) I wonder if the general opinion will change in 5-10 years once these players have finished their careers.

Master Q

2) Is very true Hawka, but I think this is judging on now.

supercoach addict

Trav Boak is way better then the Reid and Brown combo! Reids only had one good season and Brown's a fair dud.

Oh, I know. This is hindsight whereas I am talking about foresight.

Hawka

obvisoluy richmond didnt takin buddy cos they had richo  and good work there ossie dont even know who livingston was

Justin Bieber

#7
2002 - Mackie could get number 2 or 3 seeing as he's had the most club success with 2 GF wins.
2008 - Clearly Stephan Hill or Rich. Then Hurley and NicNat. NicNat has been there for the entertainment side of things, but surely the other 3 have contributed to their teams more overall.

8-6 Suited

This is how I personally see it... And who I would think have been the best of the top 10s.

2000

1. Nick Riewoldt (St. Kilda)
2. Justin Koschitzke (St. Kilda)
3. Alan Didak (Collingwood)
4. Luke Livingston (Carlton)
5. Andrew McDougal (West Coast)
6. Dylan Smith (Kangaroos)
7. Laurence Angwin (Adelaide)
8. Daniel Motlop (Kangaroos)
9. Kayne Pettiifer (Richmond)
10. Jordan McMahon (Bulldogs)

Agree with you in this lots Ossie, quite clearly goes to Nick with Didak a close second.

2001

1. Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)
2. Luke Ball (St. Kilda)
3. Chris Judd (West Coast)
4. Graham Polak (Fremantle)
5. Xavier Clarke (St. Kilda)
6. Ashley Sampi (West Coast)
7. David Hale (Kangaroos)
8. Jimmy Bartel (Geelong)
9. Luke Molan (Melbourne)
10. Sam Power (Bulldogs)

Again I agree with you completely with the order here. Judd, Hodge then Bartel and Ball.

2002

1. Brendon Goddard (St. Kilda)
2. Daniel Wells (Kangaroos)
3. Jared Brennan (Brisbane)
4. Tim Walsh (Bulldogs)
5. Jarrad McVeigh (Sydney)
6. Steven Salopek (Port Adelaide)
7. Andrew Mackie (Geelong)
8. Luke Brennan (Hawthorn)
9. Hamish McIntosh (Kangaroos)
10. Jaosn Laycock (Essendon)

While Goddard is a clear first, I differ to you here and would go for Wells second followed by McVeigh then Mackie.

2003

1. Adam Cooney (Bulldogs)
2. Andrew Walker (Carlton)
3. Colin Sylvia (Melbourne)
4. Farren Ray (Bulldogs)
5. Brock McLean (Melbourne)
6. Kepler Bradley (Fremantle)
7. Kane Tenace (Geelong)
8. Raphael Clarke (St. Kilda)
9. David Trotter (Kangaroos)
10. Ryley Dunn (Fremantle)

Yeah disgusting selection here. Coondogs first then Sylvia second.

2004

1. Brett Deledio (Richmond)
2. Jarryd Roughead (Hawthorn)
3. Ryan Griffen (Bulldogs)
4. Richard Tambling (Richmond)
5. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn)
6. Tom Williams (Bulldogs)
7. Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn)
8. John Meesen (Adelaide)
9. Jordan Russell (Carlton)
10. Chris Egan (Collingwood)

Franklin then Deledio for sure in this group followed by Griffen.

2005

1. Marc Murphy (Carlton)
2. Dale Thomas (Collingwood)
3. Xavier Ellis (Hawthorn)
4. Josh Kennedy (Carlton)
5. Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)
6. Beau Dowler (Hawthorn)
7. Patrick Ryder (Essendon)
8. Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls (Richmond)
9. Mitchell Clark (Brisbane)
10. Marcus Drum (Fremantle)

Pendles then Thomas then Murphy for me. Then would be Mitch Clark.

2006

1. Bryce Gibbs (Carlton)
2. Scott Gumbleton (Essendon)
3. Lachlan Hansen (North Melbourne)
4. Matthew Leuenberger (Brisbane)
5. Travis Boak (Port Adelaide)
6. Mitchell Thorp (Hawthorn)
7. Joel Selwood (Geelong)
8. Ben Reid (Collingwood)
9. David Armitage (St. Kilda)
10. Nathan Brown (Collingwood)

Joel Selwood takes first by a mile here followed by Gibbs.

2007

1. Matthew Kreuzer (Carlton)
2. Trent Cotchin (Richmond)
3. Chris Masten (West Coast)
4. Cale Morton (Melbourne)
5. Jarrad Grant (Bulldogs)
6. David Myers (Essendon)
7. Rhys Palmer (Fremantle)
8. Lachlan Henderson (Brisbane)
9. Ben McEvoy (St. Kilda)
10. Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide)

Gotta go Kruezer due to his ability to go forward well. Cotchin a very close second here then a gap to Dangerfield.

2008

1. Jack Watts (Melbourne)
2. Nic Naitanui (West Coast)
3. Stephen Hill (Fremantle)
4. Hamish Hartlett (Port Adelaide)
5. Michael Hurley (Essendon)
6. Chris Yarran (Carlton)
7. Daniel Rich (Brisbane)
8. Tyrone Vickery (Richmond)
9. Jack Ziebell (North Melbourne)
10. Phil Davis (Adelaide)

Stephen Hill by a country mile and a half.

2009

1. Tom Scully (Melbourne)
2. Jack Trengove (Melbourne)
3. Dustin Martin (Richmond)
4. Anthony Morabito (Fremantle)
5. Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne)
6. Gary Rohan (Sydney)
7. Brad Sheppard (West Coast)
8. John Butcher (Port Adelaide)
9. Andrew Moore (Port Adelaide)
10. Jake Melksham (Essendon)

QuoteAs good as Scully and Trengove will be, Martin was the most impressive in 2010 with Richmond finally getting their act together in draft selections.

Spot on mate. Spot on.

Bradley error fixed :)

Valk... I like Deledio and Griffen as players also, but if you offered me a choice:

1) Get Deledio AND Griffen

2) Get Franklin

I would take Franklin everytime. Franklin is a very rare commodity, there aren't many similar type of players around. As good as Deledio and Griffen are, they are far more expendable.

Cruiseon

Nice thread Ossie, I'm a bit slow on it.

My main comment is that I think Hill in 2008 is the stand-out. He was a match winner this year in a side that finished 5th and won a final verses Nic Nat would played well for the first half of a season in a team that finished last. I suspect Nic Nat has more to offer.

I'm ok with the Gibbs call, just.  ;)

ossie85

Cheers Cruise

Everyone says Hill is great... and no doubt he will be. But tell that to Brady Rawlings, and his stats simply do not back it up. Again, I have no doubt Hill be a star, but if we're judging on potential, I'm still gonna give it to Nic Nat :) But I'm willing to agree to disagree!

hawk_88

I don't think we can judge this on potential. The entire concept of this exercise, unless I am drastically mistaken, is comparing what potential the clubs saw in those players vs what they have actually achieved.

If you go by what they have actually achieved Hill has had far more impact on games than Naitanui.

ossie85

I disagree. Hill had a great second half of 2010, Nic Nat had a great first half of 2010.

If we go buy what they achieved so far in their careers, than Rich would get it.
