Watched UFC Countdown last night...
Was fantastic really has me even more pumped for Overeem vs Lesnar! Plus Cerrone and Diaz will be interesting. (Cerrone!)

Overeem tells how family life and cutting wait was the cause for a poor streak of form a while back.
Now as a heavyweight he feels he can't be defeated!

Lesnar says he is as fit as ever and wants to knock Overeem out. Tells about his Diverticulitis which was intriguing.

CANNOT WAIT!!

I think I know enough about Overeem so should be ok ... the replay is on just too (early) late like 12am Sat morning ... in the west ...

What happened?

Overeem stopped him at 2.26 of the first round....although the first minute was stalling....One good knee and Brock was done.....Retired from MMA after the match

CrowsFan

Wow! Thought he might lose but wasn't expecting him to retire...

I watched 3 Prelims on FB then read the rest of the card. DAMN, that KO in Hendricks Vs Fitch sounded brutal :o. Not to mention Overeem's! I need to youtube the highlights for them.

Lesnar said if he had won, he would have made the Title match his last fight. Guess his ongoing medical problems have caused him to retire which is a shame for anybody :(.

Basically Brock is a freak of nature athletically but he was/is not a natural striker and i dont think he ever understood it... the fact that he still became a UFC champion with that big hole in his game is amazing... im sure he is not done yet in professional sports/television, he will pop up in something else and ppl will pay him well to do it.

he just didn't have the time to build the experience he needed to go toe-to-toe with the good strikers in the division ... when he'd get hit I reckon he tended to just cover up his head and start back pedaling into the fence - nothing against his training but he just didn't have the time to 'mature' into the well-rounded fighter you have to be for top-flight MMA.

I agree, he is an athletic freak - no dude that big should be able to move as fast as he does!  :o

The queries I had going into the fight were ...

A) how much would Lesnar be affected by the 2nd bout of his diverticulitis?
B) how good was Overeem's form streak of 10wins, 1 NC really?

A) looked more to be experience technique issues than anything physical/training-prep wise
B) i was thinking that out of the 11 unbeaten fight streak, only 2-3 would you consider to be top-flight opponents and he hadn't fought Fedor at the top of his game ...

Overeem was pretty impressive and blew my query B) out of the water!  :)

Going to be interesting to see whether Junior's speed and technical striking are going to make a big difference.
Cain looked really rusty, so I wonder whether Overeem might try and take Dos Santos down due to size/strength differential or if he will be able to stalk Junior round the cage and whether Junior's speed will negate that part of Overeem's arsenal?  ???  ;)

I am absolutely shattered  :'(

Think we all need to give Brock more credit than just being a freak physically.
He fought 6 fights, with limited MMA experience.
5 of those 6 have been UFC Champs and the other 1 (Overeem) is the future champ.
Only 3 people in the last 15 years in the HW division have defended the title twice consecutively. (Lesnar, Sylvia, Couture)
Of those 3, brock held the title for the longest period.

Think we have to admit that Lesnar is one of the greatest UFC Heavyweights in history.

BratPack

I think Lesnar's success is overblown by who he is personally. Who'd he beat that was really special? Herring was a shell of his Pride days, Mir is second tier, Randy was declining and the only reason he beat Carwin was because Josh "Won't Stop A Fight Till A Man Is Half Dead" Rosenthal was the ref and Carwin gassed and even Carwin has being found wanting against guys like Cain and JDS.

I think as an athlete he is/was great and he's been great for the UFC but greatest in history is another thing.

Agree with all your points Maca, he fought top-level competition from the get go and had barely any time to really learn the craft but that can't be a concession to call him a greatest in history, though they may make him a hall of famer just on the amount of interest he generated in the UFC?

BP, I didn't see that Lesnar v Carwin fight live, but from replays and the fact that Lesnar came back and finished Carwin I reckon tends to show that Rosenthal made the right call?? I don't think it was that close to the bell was it?  ???
