yeah, sorry - usually do a review - work is hampering my FF time!  ;)

partial UFC 162 review

Tim Kennedy vs Roger Gracie
Got to the pub a bit later than I had planned but got to see this fight - didn't know much about either fighter but my mate told me that he thinks Kennedy is ex-military cos he's sponsored by an apparel company called 'Ranger Up' that have an MMA line and sponsor former military peeps who are pro-MMA fighters.

Anyhoo, Gracie in my opinion took the 1st round on points with a take-down and control in the BJJ-stakes as you would expect from anyone with the Gracie name but in the 2nd rd Kennedy started to take control in the stand-up exchange. He would also pepper Gracie with uppercuts to his head in the clinch with the height difference with Gracie not really utilising to his advantage.

Kennedy continued his control of the stand-up in the 3rd and took the unanimous decision probably 2 rounds to 1.

Frankie Edgar vs Oliveira
Excellent fight - not sure if it was, but it should be 'fight of the night'.
Great exchanges on the feet from both fighters, Oliveira looks to be a potential star of the future at 23yrs and he had a lot of variation and decent power with his kick-boxing backgroung but if you see his highlight reel, it looks like he can get submissions from almost anywhere!  :o

Frankie almost got caught in a leg/heel hook in the 1st round but after that he controlled the fight with takedowns and top position control. Even though he was held at bay, Oliveira always looked dangerous even when fighting off his back and on the ground turtle waiting for Frankie to try to capitalise waiting above. But in the end unanimous decision to Edgar.

Anderson Silva vs Chris Weidman
For the UFC middleweight title - Weidman holds out his glove when Herb Dean makes the offer but Silva declines but does a small martial arts bow from what I saw. Weidman again holds out the glove for acknowledgement after Dean gives the go, but again Silva ignores.

Both men circle the cage, Silva probably doing his usual and gauging Weidman's speed and reach and Weidman weary of Silva's renowned striking. but Weidman gets a takedown early and after trying to get into side-control goes for knee then heel hook but Silva gets out.

Silva then starts goading Weidman to hit him, putting both hands up with the "c'mon" wave or 'scoop' but Weidman wisely sticks to his gameplan which i suspect is not to let Silva get in his head.

2nd round and Silva continues the goading - to me, yeah he's being 'cocky' but that's his gameplan - taunt the opponent into strikes and counter-strike as they recoil - but he's got his hands down by his sides and he wobbles his head and chest and Weidman cautious comes forward with jabs and gets Silva with a clean left-hook (as you see from Mat's gif above) that gets Silva 'on the button' and he goes down! (eerily sort of similar to how Silva put Forrest Griffen down in their LHW non-title fight a few years ago)

Weidman then starts dropping the bombs from the top and Dean has to go 'rescue' Silva from more punishment.
Good fight but would have been interesting to see if Silva had fought 'properly' and not 'cocky'. Weidman almost wants the rematch to show it wasn't a fluke but Silva post-fight didn't sound interested sort of indicating he was tired and didn't want to fight for the title anymore.

cheers,
jas

Nice review Jas! Weidman said before the fight, he would have to beat Silva twice if he won this match. Cheers for the gif as well Mat, haven't actually seen the knockout as the after-show I watched never showed the actual knockout ::).

That he is ex-military! Had a solid ground game and stand up, but nothing spectacular.

Edgar Vs Oliviera and Swanson Vs Siver were both awarded FOTN. Think Oliviera outperformed what most expected from him so hoping he gets an easier opponent next time out :P. Might also mention Edson Barboza was on the prelims (the guy who won KOTY last year with his spinning heel kick) won his match by referee stoppage. His leg kicks pretty much left his opponent unable to continue properly, was pretty brutal watching it.

If any of you guys have FuelTV on Foxtel or something, they are showing like a past UFC event like every day (think around 11pm, 4am and 1pm). Today is UFC 158, St. Pierre vs Diaz. They show the main card so if you're like me and rarely watch events, it's a nice way to catch up on some good fights!

j959

aww man! i don't have foxtel ...  :(  ;)

Oliveira will be top flight in a few years I've no doubt ... if he works on his technical boxing a bit more and possibly works on some judo trips perhaps - i just don't see him having the quad/core base to be able to shoot for wrestling take-downs - then he'd be formidable with his BJJ skills ...  :o   ;)

I'm sure you could probably find events on youtube or download from somewhere, but I'm too lazy to do that :P.

For those of you who live in Melbourne you now have a chance to watch my bro live. I know it's short notice, but tonight he is having a fight, although just a kickboxing one in Melbourne. Not sure of the event/place yet, but will update when I do. Could be a good chance to see a superstar in the making...

i was just about to ask you for the update as to how your bro was going CF (i have 'banned' myself from FaceTube for a little while) ...  ;)

CrowsFan

Haha any specific reason for banning yourself?

The other update is that he will be trying out for TUF in september. However it's going to be hard to get in since they have decided to split the comp between 2 weight divisions, so most likely only 4 Australians will be picked in each weight...

So he lost the kickboxing last night via decision :(
Didn't help that the ref had to stop him 2 or 3 times to explain the rules haha!

Nice! Hopefully he can make it in as from what I hear, alot of the fighters have to fight above their natural weight to even get a shot so he may have an advantage over some of the smaller guys.

Bahahaha ;D. Shame he lost, but guess when he didn't know the rules properly and not his main form of combat can understand the loss.

Also jsut read TJ Grant is out of his fight with Bendo guys :(. And guess who is filling in after saying he was injured for the Aldo fight.... That's right, Pettis :P. This is a bigger money match for the UFC so the conspiracies are all coming out ;D.

Goes on his kickboxing record, but his MMA stays at a pristine 4-0. Turns out the guy he was fighting had had 12 or so kickboxing fights and had recently fought for the Victorian belt (or something), so was apparently quite good...
