Summary:

It is always very impressive for a first year player to play all 22 matches, but the 2010 Rising Star Nominee mostly flew under the radar - despite his red Ling-esque hair. With Barlow, Bastinac, Martin, Banner, Trengove, Scully and Shuey taking most of the hype, Banfield was not in a huge amount of fantasy teams to begin with, and after averaging 66.44 across the first 9 rounds - including centuries in rounds 6 and 9 - a lot of people regretted this. Banfield's price peaked in round 11 at $302,800 - and that was the time to sell. Banfield's form decreased with the Lions woeful form, averaging only 44.77 in the last 13 rounds with a high of only 69.

Also impressive is Banfield scored 27.24 for the year, and scored a goal in 16 of 22 rounds this year. Also worth note is that Mick Malthouse thought him good enough to play for Australia against Ireland in the current International Rules series, again a tremendous effort by a first year.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $284,900

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $271,200

Position: MID (maybe MID/FWD or just FWD)

m0nty has him listed as midfielder but I'm not so sure. He only averaged 10 disposals for the year, and his 27 goals might see him as a MID/FWD or maybe just a FWD. He did tackle a lot however, averaging 3 tackles a game. His price is in that awkward range, but I think that Banfield with another preseason under his belt will improve in 2011, especially if given more midfield time with the exodus of Lions midfielders (no Rischi, Sherman or Brennan and aging Black and Power).

Decision:

I like this kid, but the 2nd year rule has to apply. Unlikely for me, and a smokie if MPP.

Nice work Ossie. As impressive as this kid is, he's not for me. 2nd year rule, plus he just doesn't get the pill enough for my liking.

Will be insteresting to see his progress.

Boomz

Agree with Fletch doesn't get enough of it to be good in fantasy terms yet...I know someone who had him this year & were happy with his scores but 2nd year rule applies...

Sums it up for me. Has the talent to be a good in and under player. If MPP, could find a spot but doubt it if just solely a midfielder.

Some smarties in 2010 will put Banfeild and Bastinac on the bench, then when Bastinac peaked in round 11, they'll sell them for a star player whose price has gone down a fair bit and is just getting their form right.

said it well here
highly unlikely to make my side
2nd year blues
and i think he needs a few seasons to build up more into a regular ball winner

Maca24

love him as a player but no from me.
