Dean Cox

2010 Stats
Games: 22
Total Score: 1936 (Ranked 55th overall, 2nd amongst ruckmen)
Average Score: 88.00 (Ranked 91st overall, 4th amongst ruckmen)
High: 126 (Round 20)
Low: 33 (Round 17)
Standard Deviation: 24.64
Centuries: 9 out of 22
Starting Price: $590,000
High Price: $590,000 (round 1)
Low Price: $378,100 (round 19)

Summary:

There was a time that the great Dean Cox was the first player selected in every super coach team, such was his dominance. Aaron Sandilands has since taken that mantle. People began to worry about Dean Cox's durability, and with a hefty starting price of $590,000 for 2010, a lot stayed away. What I didn't expect was Cox to actually play all 22 rounds, but for his output to be down significantly. From 2005 to 2009, he averaged at least 98 a season. In 2010 however, he averaged 88.

Started the season badly, averaging 57 across the first 3 rounds with a high score of 79, causing a lot of people to jump off him quickly. In yet another example of why you should keep faith in premiums, he went on to average 103 with 6 centuries across rounds 4 to 11. he then decreased again, averaging 74 from round 12 to 17, before averaging 100 across the last 5 rounds of the season.

The Crystal Ball:

Based on last year's magic number
Price: $467,400

Based on m0nty's fanplanner
Price: $445,000

Position: RUC

Cox will turn 30 mid-way through next year, and with the Eagles likely to struggle, it is hard to see Cox get back to his dominant best.

Decision:

Aaron Sandilands and the improving Shane Mumford are probably the two best ruckmen from a fantasy perspective next year. However, the rest are more or less even (Jamar, Jolly, Clark, McIntosh, Cox), for this reason, Cox is short-listed, but could be better as an upgrade target.

DazBurg

agree with you ossie he has become an upgrade target if he can find his old form
he won't be starting for me

I reckon Nic Nat will take more of his ruck time, hence his decreasing scores

Agree. Cox has to be an upgrade target only these days. Nice work with the stats Ossie

Some hasty calls out there.

After Sandi, the second lock ruckman is quite a scarcity. I think I will have a good look at Cox, assess his pre-season training because at the right price I would be happy for my second ruckman to have an average of 88 and play all 22 games.

Exactly Cruise. If I'd paid almost $600k for him to average 88 last year I would have been annoyed. At this lower price however, that could well be worth it

Sandi and Petrie for mine next year.

I like Cox but is a touch and go for me. Would like to start with him at that very tempting price. If he can get back to his best or at least close, would be a steal at that price.

Right now Possibly have Ryder/Sandi/Cox are my ruck options. Can throw in Petrie for second if I need cash (as getting Sandi would be quite a big investment).

CrowsFan

I'm with HP, is at a very tempting price and would be a bargain if he gets back to his old form. With rumours going around that Sandi wont play till round 5 (don't know how anyone could know this at this stage) he could be a good option to pick instead and hope that he has risen in price by the time Sandi comes back and then you can trade him out.

BoredSaint

could be a unique next year! so on the short list

I don;t think Cox won't be unique. The second ruckman is limited so I think there will be a wide variety in most SC teams.

Maca24

unlikely. would rather go for ryder or jolly. even petrie if he isnt in my forwards.

Couldn't agree with you more ossie. Getting old, his team is not great. Won't dominate like he used to.

I keep coming back to Cox... I just don't think he spud it up... but has the potential to become huge again.....

I know. His price is rather tempting and we all know what he can do when he plays. But with his age and body catching up, good for one more season fantasy wise?
