a quote from james hird..

exactly right.. when you start rebuilding a team you got to start rebuilding the coaches..

look what Roos did with Sydney, Rutten with Carlton Bomber with Geelong with little experience..

he will rebuild an Essendon team along with himself and when were good again so will he.. he will be getting to his best at the same time we do..

sort of like what Malthouse has done with Collingwood his at his best when Collinwood are..

if you at your best whe the team is crap.. well 1 your at the wrong club but 2 you have the experience to get a premiership.. thats why we didnt appoint williams or laidly..

that is why Hird is perfect for the job..

Hird has no experience coaching though, that is a problem that rebuilding the team doesn't fix. Besides, on paper, Essendon didn't have a bad list. It was the players themselves who didn't play to that lists capabilities.

HillHero13

yeah no coaching experience but his been in footbally for 17 years he has the knowledge plus commentating would hage done him good..

and what i was sort of meant to say..

No good having an expereienced coach with an inexpereinced team..

i have said expereince so much it has lost all meaning..

Then its not fair to compare him to Malthouse because Malthouse had years of experience coaching prior to taking on a job at Collingwood.

And Knights has been in football for a long time too, as has Laidley and Williams.

Boomz

I'm with 8-6 on this. No way can you compare him to Malthouse. There have been heaps of people who have been in football as long if not longer and they have turned out to not be able to coach...

true malthouse did and was a proven premiership coach

but i'm excited to see hird and goodwin teach the young midfielders bout positioning and such

but u are right knights, laidly and choco have experience which is why if we don't get bomber back in some capacity we need choco or laidly

but i'm confident bomber is coming back
even in the herald sun it says him and cook both agreed that he sai he wouldn't coach another club which i think they meant senior

but cook himself said he may return to another club doing something else

HillHero13

im not comparing him to malthouse.. im saying that when were at our best so will hird..

just like what malthouse has done.. his at his best coaching and collingwood are at there best.. im not comparing..

Playing football for 17 years doesn't count for any years of coaching experience. We might gain an experienced team, but we have an inexperienced coach.

In your words Hilly... Can't have an experienced team without an experienced coach.

You can have plenty of water for the camel to drink, but if you can't lead it there, it won't drink it!!

History will judge Hird.

You used Ratten as a succesful coach example also Hilly, I haven't seen evidence of that yet! So far he picked up Kreuzer, Judd, Murphy and Gibbs through high selections - when he starts picking players higher in the draft that perform (like Malthouse did with Beams, Wellingham, Maxwell, Brown, O'Brien, Blair, etc) I'll pay more attention!

I'm still in two-minds about Hird, part of me is still a bit pissed that he didn't do the training, the other part thinks it is a great look Hird returning.

There is cause for optimism at Essendon. But probably not in the next year or 2.

HillHero13

im saying that there is no point getting williams or laidly because tgey have passed there peek..

hird had 15 years under sheedy being captain aswel.. so he would have learnt alot..

An Experienced Coach is good in any situation. If you have Experience you can build a team...

Leigh Matthews won a flag 11 years after winning one with Collingwood, Mick Malthouse won a flag 16 years after winning one with West Coast.

Mark Williams only won a flag 6 years ago, made a grand final 3 years ago. No reason he can't do it.

8-6 Suited

Choco William's hasn't passed his peak, merely passed his time at Power due to an incredible aged list. Way too many old players that lead to a lack of speed in an age that speed is everything in the current game. Exactly why Collingwood has been so good this yeah.

I honestly think Hirdy being back in the game is great for it, and Essendon, but I think he should have done an 'understudy' sort of training program for a couple seasons as Buckley has as neither had the experience necessary to just take over as a Senior Coach. Hopefully Hirdy proves me wrong and they go fantastic, but history suggests otherwise.

Bomber Thomson won 2 flags after being mentored by Sheedy - you're right
Neale Daniher won no flags after being mentored by Sheedy
Mark Harvey is yet to win a flag, but has shown he can coach
Dean Bailey has yet to win a flag after being mentored by Sheedy
Tim Watson didn't win a flag after being mentored by Sheedy - disaster he was....

Sorry Hilly, being mentored by Sheedy doesn't count for a great deal. Wish it did though.

Maca24

fletch give him a chance. im with hilly i think he can be a great coach. a smart man who will have a smart team behind him. after all it does come down to the players.
