Gary Ablett has reportedly signed with the GC team, in a 5 year deal in which he receives 1.9 million a year.

I believe he only made his mind yesterday but he was definately swaing that way for a while.


My biggest point of interest now will be Nathan Ablett. Currently he doesn't have a deal on the table from the Suns... Would be nice to see him lining up after a poor season last year. He is still training with them so now he has more incentives to get himself a deal with his brother signing there.

apparently his pay breaks down like this

1.9m / year for 5 years
$80 000 per match ( with endorsments $120 000 )
$20 000 - $30 000 / qtr
$4 000 per kick if he verages 30 kicks
$1 000 or so each minute of footy
$6 000 000 up front payment

thats a whole lot of spondoola which could go to waste with a knee reco or two

if i were the other AFL clubs i would be shoring up my uncontracted players before GWS get their hands on them in the trade period

Not like Ablett snr always played with Geelong though.
Agreed the game is all about money now, has been for a long time.
There is the odd player with a spot of loyalty, the greats like Hird (how could he go anywhere else though?) Buckley, Voss.

The only BIG BIG BIG names that I know turned down offers are Cooney and Riewoldt although I know there are way more.

yes but loyalty is a lovely thing but it's gotta work both ways too
these days the game is so ruthless when ur time is up your quick to be tapped on the shoulder even if ur still playing good footy
