Not saying Buckley will be more succesful, it just seems to make more sense is all.

I'm also sick of really good assistant coaches being overlooked

Agree, it makes a lot more sense, especially when you offer 4 years to someone who has only coached Under 9's

Fletch, seriously get off Hird’s back and give him a chance!

I also don’t necessarily agree with the decision but at least give Hird a chance to prove himself before writing him off...

Take the positives out of it â€" yes Hird hasn’t been an official assistant coach but he served a pretty good apprenticeship while he was playing for Sheedy for all of those years!!!!

What should have happened is they said to Laidley or Williams - look, we'll give you the senior coach job, but only for a year or two, after which Hirdy takes over.

Or even Richardson.

Hopefully Hird turns out good but needs some help. No coaching experience could mean a disaster waiting to happen. Needs experience behind him at least.

I'd like to give him a chance, but there have been two previous examples of coaches with no experience, going belly up... Watson and Voss. Both of these had apprenticeships under Sheedy and Matthews; could not ask for better mentors, but they haven't worked.

What makes you think this time it will?

I hope he proves me wrong, but I don't think you can compare captaincy to coaching. If he gets a highly qualified assistant, like Bomber, then that would be a different story!

Looks like Bomber is going to do what Mick (Malthouse) is doing. Hird/Buckley as the front man but really, they do work on game day while everything else is taken care of for them.
Essendon flows through Hirds blood, hopefully he is actually a good coach, would be horrible to see his reputation tarnished over this.

Gotta feel sorry for Alan Richardson though. He was close to being senior coach now it is looking like he will lose AC and C. Ouch.

roo boys!

Bomber not going to the Dons :(

HillHero13

Goodwin Dean Wallis and Sean Wellman are coming as assitant coaches..

Doogie

To all those so called 'Essendon supporters' jumping off because of hird becoming senior coach, SHAME.

Personally im very excited with Hird being named coach and have been hoping something like this happened earlier.
Essendon need someone like james to take the reigns. The players have lost the passion and what it means to wear the red strip and bring in hird will ignite that. Something matty knights or any other coach couldn't do.
Yeah he hasnt coached but hes a smart man with a good footy brain. He will bring in a good coaching team to have behind him.

Atleast hes having a go and wants to bring this great club back to the top.
Exciting times for the essendon football club!!  8)
