Well this is how it works.

If you want to make Defoe a Free agent you have to wait till the end of the draft, then you can Drop him, then anyone you can pick anyone who wasn't chosen. But, Defoe will be available to the first person to claim him. It's kinda pointless not trying to trade him, because If I give you my last pick, you still get someone who is good enough to be picked instead of some bad player.
