Benjy251090’s Supercoach thoughts for Rucks of 2011
For my Supercoach team of 2011, I am considering 3 different approaches in the ruck division.

Rucks
This will be my most preferred structure of my rucks and I am pretty sure I know who I will get:

  • Super Premium
  • Premium
  • Playing Rookie
  • Cheapest FWD/RUCK

This structure is a ‘Set and Forget’ one. It will be there the whole season unless one of them get injured and I will have back up from a rookie who I already know will be. The fourth spot will be taken by an MPP as I am assuming I will be getting a FWD/RUCK in the forward line.

This is the other structure I will be looking at for my rucks:

  • Premium
  • Cheap Premium
  • Playing Rookie
  • Cheapest FWD/RUCK

This will be used if I need to use extra cash elsewhere and I will just upgrade whichever of the two playing rucks is not doing well

The third approach I might try is what Ossie alluded me too in the ‘all out’ approach. This is where you have 4 playing rucks with one of them being MPP for the FWD/RUCK. This structure is below:

  • Super Premium or Premium
  • MPP FWD/RUCK
  • Playing Rookie
  • Playing Rookie

This structure will ensure I have at least 2 rucks playing every week whilst keeping the MPP option open.

Super Premiums
The ‘Super Premiums’ are players that will cost over 600K after averaging over 110 in 2010. These are the players that you must have at least 1 or 2 of, not necessarily at the start of the season, but by the end they are a must have.

Aaron Sandilands (FRE) - $605,500

  • The man is 211cm tall and can move
  • Number one ruckman by a long way in 2010
  • Can give a massive score so can be an X-Factor captain if needed

Premiums
The ‘Premium’ players will cost between about 475K and 600K, averaging between 90 and 110 for season 2010. These players are the consistent performer’s week in, week out and can’t go wrong with any of them.

Shane Mumford (SYD) - $491,700

  • Was the number two ruckman in what was a poor year for rucks
  • Can give a massive score, his highest being 175
  • Will be interesting to see how he goes in 2011 when Seaby is back

Cheap Premiums
The ‘Cheap Premiums’ are the players who will cost between 350K and 475K averaging between 70 and 90 in 2010. These are often players who were premium players the year before and averaged a lot less than the season before or they have taken a step forward and will be looking to increase their average again next year.

Dean Cox (WCE) - $467,400

  • After starting at near ‘Super Premium’ price, it was a very disappointing 2010
  • Was solid all season but didn’t dominate like 2009
  • Naitanui is starting to take a lot of his ruck time so he is spending time up front

Patrick Ryder (ESS) - $455,000

  • Very consistent season
  • No outstanding scores
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals

Mark Jamar (MEL) - $437,200

  • Very inconsistent season
  • Seemed to do really well or really bad
  • Very good around the ground
  • Improved his 2009 average by roughly 10 in 2010

Matthew Kreuzer (CAR) - $433,500

  • Very consistent season
  • A few really good scores
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals
  • Without the 6 he scored because he did his ACL in Round 13 he would have averaged 88.33

Hamish McIntosh (NTH) - $433,100

  • Fairly consistent season
  • No outstanding scores
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals

David Hille (ESS) - $424,200

  • Very consistent season
  • One outstanding scores
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals
  • Without the 9 he scored because he did his knee in Round 11 he would have averaged 84.6

Darren Jolly (COL) - $423,900

  • Very inconsistent season
  • First half of the season was really poor, second half was really good
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals
  • Will be his second year at Collingwood next year so will find it easier maybe to adjust to the structure

Ben Hudson (WBD) - $419,300

  • Very consistent season
  • One massive score
  • Very good around the ground

Mitch Clark (BRI) - $386,900

  • Very inconsistent season
  • First half of the season was really poor, second half was really good
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals
  • After starting at ‘Premium’ price, it was a very disappointing 2010

Nick Naitanui (WCE) - $378,000

  • Very inconsistent season
  • Either does really good or really bad
  • Doesn’t know his way around the ground
  • Spends a lot of time up forward
  • Will be his third year next year so he might be a good prospect at the right price

Mid Priced
The ‘Mid Priced’ players averaged up to 70 for 2010. These are usually the 3rd or 4th year players who will be looking to take the next step forward or they have moved clubs and needed to take time to get into their new clubs system.

Kurt Tippett (ADE) - $359,400

  • One of the most talked about player pre-season but turned out to be a flop at the start
  • Had a patch of about five rounds scoring five centuries
  • Plays up forward mainly with the number one defender on him
  • MPP FWD/RUCK (if I get him it will be in the forward line)

Todd Goldstein (NTH) - $349,300

  • Fairly inconsistent season
  • Second ruck to McIntosh
  • Often goes forwards and kicks goals
  • Improved on his 2009 average by about 15 in 2010

Ben McEvoy (STK) - $336,900

  • Fairly inconsistent season
  • Poor first half of the season but better in the second half
  • Second ruck to Gardiner
  • Often played forward and kicked goals

Mark Seaby (SYD) - $331,900 (will get a discount but not sure how much, assuming it will be 20% which will give him a price of $265,600)

  • Very inconsistent season
  • One outstanding scores
  • Very good around the ground
  • Gets forward and kicks goals
  • Should get a small discount
  • Without the 3 he scored because he did his ankle in Round 6 he would have averaged 74.4

Drew Petrie (NTH) - $294,760 (should get a 30% discount which will take his price to $206,300)

  • Played only 2 games this season
  • Normally plays full 22
  • Averaged very high in previous seasons so will be a steal
  • Mainly plays forward
  • MPP FWD/RUCK (most likely will get him up front)

Returner from Injury or Year off
The ‘Returner from Injury or Year off’ players did not play a game in season 2010. These are players that did well in 2009 but did not play in 2010 for different reasons.

Jamie Charman (BRI) - $159,300 (Assuming that he will receive a 50% discount will be $83,400)

  • May not get a game as Brisbane may be comfortable with the Leuenberger/Clark combination
  • Will be cheap if he gets a game
  • May move clubs which might help him

Rookies
The ‘Rookies’ are first year players for 2011 so will be cheap. These are the only rookies I know of at the moment.

Zac Smith (GCS)

  • 205cm and still growing
  • Will be like Warnock and Trengove this year as permanent emergencies
  • Will be handy for the byes

Prospective Ruck Line-up

This is my ruck line-up for my preferred structure.

Ruck 1: Aaron Sandilands (FRE)
Ruck 2: Shane Mumford (SYD), Matthew Kreuzer (CAR) or Patrick Ryder (ESS)
Ruck 3: Zac Smith (GCS)
Ruck 4: Cheapest FWD/RUCK

The second ruck combination will be.

Ruck 1: Shane Mumford (SYD)
Ruck 2: Matthew Kreuzer (CAR) or Patrick Ryder (ESS)
Ruck 3: Zac Smith (GCS)
Ruck 4: Cheapest FWD/RUCK

The third ruck combination will be.

Ruck 1: Aaron Sandilands (FRE)
Ruck 2: Kurt Tippett (ADE)
Ruck 3: Zac Smith (GCS)
Ruck 4: Cheap Playing ruck

Any suggestions or comments, whether they are negative or positive, will be much appreciated. Over the next few weeks I will be releasing my thoughts on Forwards and Mids.

EDIT: I have added my estimate at player’s prices for next year (using last year’s magic number of 5311).

Very, very good read.

I agree with most if it. May have Tippett/Petrie combo (one in ruck, one in forward - will help with byes).

I like the first option better, Sandilands is a MUST HAVE.

I'd recommend having 2 playing non-starters though - this year I had Warnock and Trengove and at some points during the year had to start them both. Especially with the byes this year, it should be all hands on deck.

Can't wait for the other 2 articles!

Forwards i will start on the weekend, and mids will take ages to do so that might be a while before it comes out

i guess that could be a 3rd strategy i might add, but personally i will prefer this one unless there is no cheap FWD/RUCK's. it will also depend on how tight i am for money

Another great read benjy.

Alot of potential cheap premiums next year. Might be a good thing to go without Sandi for some much needed cash elsewhere. Might toy with that idea.

ossie, been thinking the exact same thing about Petrie and Tippett. Mentioned it somewhere else, but would likely become one of the most popular combos if both are MPP again. Tip may be inconsistent but could save a donut or two throughout the bye season.

Brilliant read benjy. I prefer option 1 the best. Superb reasearch though.

I have added your option, i was also thinking that at the start of the offseason, it will all come down to cash and availability

Master Q

All I can say is, no matter what, Zac Smith has to be in your team. I like the Idea of Tippett/Petrie combo, however I think Ryder will be a better option, as when Ryder is out, you can play Zac Smith, or use your 4th Ruck MPP for cover.

Your Strategy is similar to my DT Strategy (http://www.fanfooty.com.au/forum/index.php/topic,21669.0.html)

Great Read,
-Q  :)

benjy251090

i took the idea of putting one of these together from the post you did Q(hope you dont mind) and i agree that ryder could be really good, but i am liking the look of kreuzer as well though, there will be a lot of cheapish options around but you have to pick the right one.

Master Q

I don't mind. Krooze will also be an option, it will depend on Prices to see who I choose between those 2.

benjy251090

going by last years magic number should be just over 400K, and the only reason he is that low is because of the 6 (as i alluded to)

roo boys!

Yeah I will be locking in Sandi, option 1 is what I will be doing.

Haven't decided on the number 2 ruck for this though, I will probably leave that until last so I know how much to spend exactly. Will probably be going with hopefully Mumford but if I can't afford him I really don't know who to get from the Cheap Premiums.

I will be getting Petrie up forward this year, discount will help a lot and he should have a full pre-season and be back to his best.

I am staying away from Tippet, the MPP aspect does lure me but it's a general rule for me. :)

Master Q

Don't really need Tip as long as you have your 4th Ruck as MPP.
