QuoteCURRENT Geelong coach Mark Thompson has been heavily backed to take over the reins at Essendon.

The former Essendon premiership captain has been backed from $101 into $2.75 to be the next Bombers coach with online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au.

Yesterday, Thompson was listed at $101, but by 11pm he was into $2.75 only behind Mark Williams ($1.75) and Alan Richardson ($2.50) in betting.

"We trimmed Thompson's price pretty quickly when the bets started rolling in, but he was backed the whole way down from $101 into $2.75 and we're still taking bets at that price," Sportsbet.com.au’s Haydn Lane said.

"It's certainly interesting considering Thompson is contracted to Geelong until the end of 2011."

On Sunday Richardson was backed from $2.25 into $1.75 before drifting to $2.50.

No. He will not leave Geelong to coach Essendon.

bunyip

Agreed. They would have to offer him something special, and they don't have any money after paying out Knights. ;D

Alex7089

Essendon always has money ;)
Remember that they have way to much, they should give some to Melbourne :P
Not a matter of money, but a matter of potential premiership coaching players you know, love and are comfortable with Vs. coaching a bottom 8 side at a club you love but with mediocre players who you do not know...Easy decision for him and as if Geelong will show him the door!

bunyip

Geelong won't sack Bomber of course, but Bomber has said he wants to do something else other than coaching after his contract expires.
He's also promised that he won't coach another team. Knowing Bomber, he'll stick to his word. He values his integrity highly.

Hawka

Bomber wont coach agian after the catters

Alex7089

I would also be surprised, then again, I never thought Sheeds would coach after Essendon...

Torress

would be bloody great if bomber did infact coach.
i've heard he is keen to get into some big partnership to own or operate some massive shopping complex that will either be in melbs or geelong??
hey he'd make us better quicker than any other coach prob could atm. not sure if the dons are a premiership team of the future, but who knows??
if bombers land a good coach, good players will follow. they had to sack knights - i will now be a member next year because of it
