Ann Merryweather was convicted of High-Treason in the early months of 1693. The crime of which she was convicted was ‘Composing, Printing, and Publishing the late King James's Declaration’ . At her trial, the jury was all men and the Indictment that was used at her trial stated
That she being a person of a turbulent spirit, and instigated and seduced by the Devil, and minding and intending to Depose and put to Death Their most Sacred Majesties King William and Queen Mary; and to subvert and alter the Government of this Kingdom.
This shows how big a problem it was for this to come out in that time, even for something as minor as several pamphlets and some documents that she had in her house. At the trial, Merryweather was sentenced to be burnt at the stake after only half an hour’s deliberation by the jury . In 1950, burning at the stake was ended as a punishment in 1650, but was reinstated later in the 17th Century as part of the Commonwealth Restoration . From this document, they stated that ‘no woman was burnt for a political event after 1688’  even though it clearly states that Merryweather was burnt at the stake in January of 1693. Another woman that got burnt at the stake after the Restoration was Katharine Hays.
