Brief History of the Mighty Bulls

Pooraka began life as the Abattoirs Football Club, the original clubrooms and oval were located on grazing land west of Main North Road.  Time has since seen this and the surrounding farmland develop into the suburbs of Pooraka, Montague Farm and more recently Mawson Lakes.

In 1968 the club moved to its current location, purchasing a block of land adjacent to the then cow paddock now known as Lindblom Park, home of the "Mighty Bulls".  The change of name to Pooraka Football Club soon followed.

When the SAFA was formed in 1978, Pooraka became an inaugural member and soon became one of the strongest metropolitan football clubs in both senior and junior football.

It completely dominated the SAFA in the latter years of that association, winning six Division 1 Premierships between '84 and '94 as well as many successes in junior football.

Pooraka was the envy of other clubs as a result of its success in junior development, where a number of juniors went on to play VFL/AFL football while many others played in the senior premiership teams mentioned above.

When SAFA folded in 1996, the club joined the SAAFL and like many grass roots clubs has since found it tough going with limited success since the inception of the AFL and competition from other sports and recreations that are available today.

You had to see it to believe it. Bulls down by a point, we had to be 10 mins into overtime!!. Every man was going hard in on the ball and the Bulls just kept willing it forward. They managed to snap a point and draw level. I was relieved knowing now we should at least have extra time. From the kick in Golden Grove managed to get it clear of danger and I knew there wouldn't be much time left. But then it happened, the Bulls gained control once again and somehow (bodies going everywhere) got it to a player running through the middle, he dodged a couple and from just inside 50 he put it on his boot and...... rolling... rolling... SIREN... rolling... rolling... POINT! I actually didn't hear the siren at the time. Was celebrating the lead, when I saw Bulls running from the bench and the ump put his hands in the air to call full time.
