Softest #1 would have to be when Freo traded the #1 pick for Trent Croad.  The Hawks went on to pick Luke Hodge with that pick.

ARRRGGGHHHH

**We gave up picks #1, #20 and #36 and got Luke McPharlin and Troy Simmonds (that was via on-trading of a pick and Daneil Bandy).  Hawthorn then used pick #36 to draft Sam Mitchell.**

Then we traded Craod back to Hawthorn for pick #10 (Ryley Dunn anyone?)

ARRRGGGHHHH

2001 was one of the strongest drafts EVER. - Hodge, Ball, Judd, Hale, Bartel, NDS, James Kelly, Stevie J, Mitchell, Joey, GAJ (father/son rule), Swan, LRT, Campbell Brown

John Hutton would prob be another choice.  #1 pick back in '91 and played a total of 36 games with 3 clubs for 70 goals (including 2 hauls of 8)
::) :o that hurts

Oooh. Imagine if Freo had Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge now? Freo are big time players already...

They would be a top 4 side withthose two :o Imagine that midfield, Sandi in the ruck, Hodge, Mitchell, Barlow with Pav rotating...

I would LOOOOOOOOOOOVE to have Hodge playing for Freo.  We also traded pick #17 to get 'back' Jeff Farmer that year.

Dont forget Mundy, Hill, Morabito and Palmer running through that midfield.

Mundy B or Low B+
Hill B-
Palmer B- or C+
Morabito is overated C

valkorum

Did you just make them up Q... Mundy is an A grade midfielder (prob an A-)

Averages per game:
23 disposals (11 kicks, 12 handballs)
4 clearances
5 tackles
4 inside 50's

I think Hill is a C+/B- (still inconsistent and in his second year)
Palmer is a B-/C+ (really only his second year)
Morabito I agree is a C (only his first year)

But yet.....

Our midfield is ranked
3rd in clearances (2nd in clearance differential)
4th in tackles
2nd in contested marks
1st in hitouts (thanks Sandi :))
3rd in 1st possessions

Master Q

Ok Mundy was the only one I was unsure about... A- I think aswell.

We agree about Hill
Agree about Palmer
Agree about Morabito

Just back on topic, I am not saying Gibbs is unskilled or not talented just that he is a front runner, and yes soft. I pose the question who would you rather in the trenches beside you when you need to dig deep against the odds?

1 Gibbs v Selwood
2 Gibbs v Murphy
3 Gibbs v Pendlebury

PS: Freo's midfield is a B- at best.

Alex7089

Um, Gibbs is a very good player no doubt but I don't think he is the toughest bloke. Selwood is my pick from those guys :)

Ok Gibbs isn't better then any of them, but they are all amazing. I would prefer gibbs against watts, maybe Kruezer and I'd say over Scully.

Yes, but Gibs has had more of a chance to establish himself , those three still young. Although I still think that Kreuz would not have gone pick no1 if Carlton didn't need a ruckman so desperately... top 10 but not 1...

Similar to the Pies and Fraser I guess.

Mundy's a great player, but a B+ midfielder in my opinion. 23 average disposals isn't elite just yet - he will probably become one though!

I agree, you need to be getting a little more of the pill than that to be considered an A grade midfielder.
