Thanks for the info guys. I am not "Getting on Board" i dont have enough trades left to capitalise and i have good bench cover in Palmer for the Mids. I just wish Banner would get some more time in the seniors!

Love the read jackal :). Always cautious with packed mids.

Traded him in to cash in scully 2 weeks ago :D. Hope he sticks to help my bench (with martin). But now I have too much cash, i don't know what to do with it :'(. 260k just sitting there :'(.

I have read multiple fantasy football websites across the course of this evening and the general consensus is that Gysberts will play.

I have a few opinions on the matter (rightly or wrongly) and i would like to air them:

1) Gysberts direct competition for spots in the team are players such as Scully, Trengove and Mckenzie. These players already have runs in the bank this year and are not going to make way for a 3rd game player.

2) Other Melbourne midfielders such as Sylvia, Jones (should they be fit to play), Moloney, Bruce etc etc etc are not going to be dropped for Gysberts... EVER. It would take a string of bad performances for this to happen and would not just happen on the back of 2 good games from an young kid.

3) McDonald is out for one week with Hamstring soreness. This will probably ensure Gysberts gets a game this week... but sure as hell does not guarantee him a game when captain courageous comes back into the fold.

4) All football teams need balance and therefore only a certain amount of midfield players will be picked each week and only a certain amount of young 'debutant' type players with very little experience will be picked each week. Gysberts is obviously one of these.

I believe all of these statements above to be true. If anyone disagrees i welcome them to argue their case. All of this culminates in my final, most important point:

Gysberts, no matter how good he has been in the sort term, is not a very intelligent fantasy football pick. He is not ensured more than about 4 or 5 games this season and going into the pointy end of the season and finals will probably be running around in the VFL.

I believe people are compelled to 'believe' he will be the next Barlow... the answer to all our prays, because after all, there isn't many viable downgrade options at this point in the season (See NOK, Danny Hughes, Campbell Heath etc). Its almost like there is a consensus on this forum (and many others) that if everyone gets him... then its ok to get him as well. People seem to want to act now and deal with the problems of copping donuts later (not to mention to endless forum whinging when it happens).

The reason for this topic is to make people think... don't just be a sheep and jump on board because everyone else is. Its decisions like this that will make your team stand apart come finals time as opponents with no bench coverage suddenly have donuts sprouting up all over the place and with no trades to cover them. It will be at that point that you think back to round 12 and realize you wasted a trade on a guy that played 5 games... just because everyone else did.

Remember the saints resting all those important players late in the season to rest them for finals? Is your bench going to stand up if something similar happens? Dont be caught out like many others.

Before I get started I just want to say that I agree with most of what you said jackal, I just wish to add some more information that may or may not support what you've said, based on a Melbourne supporter's view.

1) I wouldn't say that his direct competition is Scully, Trengove and McKenzie; Melbourne's philosophy this year appears to be the best player's will play regardless of age/experience. By that (extremely simplistic) notion if he keeps performing then he will not get dropped (hard to see him maintaining 25+ possession games though). Obviously alot also comes down to personnal (as you mentioned in point 4) and a team cannot simply stack their team with midfielders, which leads me to my next point.

2) A look at Melbourne's midfielders: McDonald, Jones, Moloney, Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, McKenzie, and to a lesser extent: Davey, Sylvia, and Bruce, Morton (I say lesser because these player's have been playing more forward or back than in the midfield this year). Obviously there are 5 midfield positions (excluding the ruck - 2 rovers, centre, 2 wings). Therefore carrying 7 "pure" midfielders (as listed above) would not be out of the question, although they are more likely to carry 6 and have Davey, Sylvia, etc rotate through. This bring's me back to my first point: if Gysberts is outperforming McKenzie, Scully, or Trengove (or even Jones or Moloney) there is no way he could be dropped; it would send the wrong message to a young player.

3) I completely agree, with McDonald out this almost guarantees Gysberts a game this week. As for the future; no one knows. As I said above he keeps getting 26/27 touches he won't (or shouldn't) get dropped. No one knows whether he or another midfielder will go down with an injury, we just can't tell.

4) Yes a team requires balance, however as I mentioned earlier it is perfectly normal to take 6 or 7 pure midfielders into a game. I think match-ups (and obviously form) will determine who plays and who doesn't (i.e. does the opposition have 2 strong ruckman? Do they have a number of tall key forwards/ backman? etc).

5) You and others have likened Gysberts to that of Danny Hughes, Rohan Bail, Campbell Heath, and NOK. In this case these comparisons are not valid as none of the aformentioned players were being named in the best (as Gysberts has been).

6) I highly doubt anyone thinks Gysberts is the "next Barlow", and you should probably be reported to the moderater for that dumb comment (as you incorrectly suggested Slap should have been)

A few more points:

7) Gysberts is almost certain to be rested at some point, just like Scully, Trengove and McKenzie. Just something to consider.

8 ) Melbourne is obviously rebuilding and thinking long term. Scully, Trengove and Gysberts (and to a lesser extent McKenzie) will, hopefully, be the core of the midfield in a few years time (hopefully similar to Ablett, Bartel, and Selwood :P). Playing them together as much as possible is vital in developing them both as individuals and as a midfield unit.

All of these points lead to my conclusion that Gysberts would be a risky pick-up if you are planning on having him as your primary midfield back-up come finals time. However as Slap (and some others said) he is currently the only real downgrade option (and maybe Connors as Chappy35 mentioned) and could be a good cash cow come finals time. It all comes down to each individuals situation (i.e. long term trading plans, how many trades they have left, etc).

So basically I agree with you jackal: "don't just be a sheep and jump on board because everyone else is" consider all factors relative to your team!

With a midfield of
bartel, gibbs, mitchell, J selwood, Barlow and pendlebury with bastinac and shuey on the pine keen to get Gysberts in but wanna make some cash, Bastinac's B/E is 38 this week should i hold on to him and wait for someone else to pop up cos im not making any cash off shuey!! ideas??? cheers

elxam

He will play this week - you just can't drop a kid who took it up the the  almighty Cats and won a NAB rising star nomination the week after.

He will play every week barring injuries if he performs - and this applies to everyone, Ablett included. It's that simple!

Will he perform ? Well, make your own judgment before you click that button.

IMO he will have better games than most other rookies in the mids coming on board since round 2.

Form = Job security.
