IMO, Defense is the Key to winning Preimierships. Look at the past few years,

Sydney-Leo Barry,Craig Bolton,Kennelly etc
Geelong-Harley,Scarlett,Hunt,Mackie etc
Hawthorn-Croad,Hodge etc
Brisbane-Mal Micheal (While he was good ;D ) , Chris Johnson, Luke Power (Played Back in those days), Leppitch etc

Yes you need a good back 6 to win a premiership, or you end up like Essendon where you just leak goals and get bunches kicked against you at once.

Sydney had a fantastic back line and they only won one flag. St.Kilda have the best back line EVER and have yet to win one.
Brisbane, Hawthorn and Geelong all had (have) top forward lines.
7 of the last 9 GF's the winner kicked over 100 points

That WCE eagle backline did alright considering their age/experience IMO. Although it was the Eagles midfield that was the reason they won 06 and made it to 05. Back six helps but you need a gun midfield more IMO.

Eagles backline in 92/94 was pretty decent... Jackovich, McIntosh, Worsfold, McKenna, Brennan and Hart.

Ok well of course Defense is Key. The defense not only lays the foundations to get the ball into midfield but they also stop the opposition from scoring.

Having said that each role plays their part. For instance, if you have a genuine backline of premiums to stop the opp from scoring it is no good if your mid does not make clearances from hit outs or take the run and carry from half back flanks.

Then you have your forward line is not much use unless they can convert all the hard work the mid and backline have done.

In the end one does not win without the other. Team game

Yes it's a team game, and the players have to learn both offensive and defensive skills these days, your position is irrelevant. Offensive moves are instigated from full back, forwards are required to apply defensive pressure when they don't have the ball.

? Brisbane is agreeable, Hawthorn? Rioli, Lance "The Fluke"Franklin, Roughhead? Geelong? Stevie J, Chapman who often plays midfield...

that is the list according to Fan footy depth chart of our defenders

(i've only shown the ones who are likely to get picked week to week and atm they are doing well)

although we are ranked 2nd points for (112.1 ppg)

we are 7th in points against (87.7 ppg)

(that might make it difficult to win a flag this year but can we do it?).
