Happy new year everybody! WXVs is BACK and ready to fill the void only meaningful social relationships can leave behind, only better.

It makes us laugh, it makes us sulk for days on end... but most importantly, it brings together a wonderful community who share this extremely niche interest. Here's to another amazing chapter of this history-rich competition, made possible by everyones keen engagement.

Bring on Season 14!

A REMINDER ABOUT SUBMISSION RULES:
- green = new
- Never edit posts - make a new post if you're making a team change
- 4 emergencies are permitted.
- You don't have to name 4 emergencies, however, I won't be finding a replacement emergency for you. If you do name a full squad however, and make a mistake in your submission, I will continue to correct these using your list preferences as a guide.
- NO LOOPHOLING ALLOWED - please see this post. No more naming of tactical donuts. If your D4 is out of action after a partial lockout, and your next most preferred player at E1 has already played, tough luck. You name a new D4.
- Flood/Attacks have bonus/penalties of +15%/-25% per impacted player
- You are permitted to indicate whether you'll flood/attack and REST both before and AFTER the partial lockout.
- Players are eligible to be subbed out of a match if they take NO part of the 2nd half of an AFL match (i.e. eligible if subbed during HT), or if they themselves are an AFL substitute (green vest) at game commencment
- Players are ONLY subbed out of a match if they have an eligible replacement (listed either on the utilities or emergencies)
- If you were forced to name an OOP player in your XV, and that player then becomes eligible to be subbed, I will replace them with another OOP player.
- You can now tag forwards with defenders, and defenders with forwards
  - As per all score modifiers, tagging will only impact the raw score, not the boosted or adjusted score that may be present in a flood or attack.
- You can name your 'train-on' players in their 'trained' position at 25% penalty rather than 50%. If they are required to cover a starting 13 position from the bench or emergencies, they will only do so if there are no other players from the bench or emergencies available.

Buenos Aires were denied the 3-peat last year, unable to follow it's twice proven premiership formula of recovering from a late-season lapse to storm home to a premiership.  They aren't letting up in 2025 however, with off-season additions Luke Ryan and Darcy Cameron adding heavy armaments to an already deadly arsenal. The side would be described as top-heavy if it's bottom 5 players weren't also excellent. They have it all, so expect them to feature late in August again and perhaps avenge its 3-peat in style.

Mexico City's ending to its 2024 was a poor reflection of the heights it hit, having won the minor premiership only for late-season injuries to relegate it to a sputtering preliminary finals exit. Whilst disappointing, I wouldn't be concerned about its prospects for 2025, as one of a host of seemingly stacked lists aiming for premiership glory. A fit Mexico City can blow WXVs away...

... so it's concerning (if not somewhat just) that both of these lists enter the first round decimated by injury.  Tom Green, Darcy Parish and Jordan De Goey are among the outs for Buenos Aires, whilst Sam Flanders, Nick Newman and Hayden Young headline the outs for Mexico City. It's particularly concerning for Buenos Aires that its outs are centered in the middle, whom already may need to pray that some of its rookies get an AFL call-up in order to avoid an OOP. Pending that, HGA gives them an edge in this match-up and I'll back them in. It'll be disheartening to watch these sides still post 140+, for the rest of us.

PURPLE'S MATCH OF THE ROUND

The Grand Final REMATCH! Could the MOTR be anything else?

Seoul will rue the unavailability of a few of its stars at the last dance, preventing it from reaching a score that would trouble the eventual winners New Delhi. Seoul kept it's list relatively intact, clearly believing its current squad has what it takes to win the flag, whilst finding ways to add the likes of Mason Redman, Matt Crouch and Stephen Coniglio to ensure it makes it to the final day in August once again.

New Delhi, what a season 2024 was! Essentially flawless from Round 8 last year, the Premiers also took out the World Idol, Coach of the Year and the EurAsian title.  The reigning premiers kept its list pretty much unchanged, backing them in once again to deliver a 2nd flag in a row... and why wouldn't you? New Delhi showed responed to every challenge last year, and it's that ability to rise on the ocassions - that it did better than anyone else - that will see it threaten again in 2025.

With that said however, I have Seoul as warm favourites for this match-up, with premiership captain Zak Butters unavailable coupled with a likely strong HGA.

The Cobras would be thrilled that it finished top 4 last year, but deeply concerned about not raising a yelp in its straight sets exit, as its more seasoned competitors found a new gear. However, with this experience behind them, and tactful recruits Miller and Keays, they will back the natural improvement available from its list to this year challenge for the flag.

The Gladiators... well we've all seen this movie before, right? It boasts a fearsome arsenal capable of obliterating any team it faces, yet it fails to secure the results its lists promises, a habit formed from its time in Moscow.  Last year, it was the 2nd highest scoring team, yet lost its AWAY elimination final. We don't doubt what it can do - look at just last week, when it smashed everyone to win the pre-season cup - but we doubt what it can do when it matters. Fix that, and the flag is theirs.

I'll back the Cobras in this match-up, noting Errol, Houston, and to lesser extents Kossie and Johannisen are all unavailable for Rome, whilst the Cobras, based on last years averages, are eying off 1500 in this one!

A famously economical team in 2023 boasting a list with depth but no stars, Rio attempted to boost what it could in 2024 with mixed results, failing to find that star player. It started the year in similarly economical fashion with 5 wins from 132ppg, but would go on to win only 3 more matches as the sting of its tier 2 fixture set in. In the 2024 trade period, it was able to get its hands on some solid players in Josh Daicos and Jack Crisp, and has actually been able to find its missing star players from within in TDK and NWM. It makes for soluble ingredients in its already solid list, and will have reason for optimism to make finals in 2025.

The Islanders once again had limited engagement in the trade period, but its famously potent list that has done so much for UTM in the last half-decade... is starting to wane. Whilst still finishing top 6 last year, it was arguably a rung below the heavy hitters, save for its amazing captain Marcus Bontempelli who would still at times bob up and take them down. It's traditionally not a recipe for success, as it leaves it susceptible to scenarios exactly like the one it faces in its first month of the season...

... no Bont? Big, big worries. Based on last years averages, and accounting for unavailable players and HGA, I have Rio winning by 100 SC points, and I think the result will be reflective of both teams fortunes this year.

Cairo may be a bit of a sleeper in terms of the competitions expectations, and I'll tell you why. In the last month of 2024, where it had access to breakout player Matt Phillipou, it scored the 7th most in the league and notched up a 3-1 record, bringing it's season total to 8-9 in unsuspecting fashion, given the competitions attention were on the established top 8 at the time. Add to that off-season recruits Mason Wood, Tom Barrass, Dion Prestia and even Sparrow and Jordon, then all of a sudden Cairo has one of the deepest lists going around, with players that can elevate it to the next level. Is patience a virtue?

Well we'll find out, as they come up against the team that was tired of waiting, and pulled the trigger as the most aggressive team of the trade period. Bringing in the likes of Grundy, Treloar, Treacy and Mac Andrew is POINTS ACQUIRED, and it may be enough to bring Christchurch into the finals for the first time since 2018. In fact, if fit and firing, there's no maybe about it.

Amazingly though, albeit thanks to the early injuries of Treloar, Darcy and Cairo HGA, I have Cairo winning by 100 SC points based off last years averages, and Cairo to score the 4th highest overall! If Cairo were to win this match, I'll be quite excited for them this year.

An unlucky (or lucky?) team to be classified in Tier 2, given that the Wolves can match it with anyone, but it was noticeably more inconsistent than its fellow finalists, deserving of both its place in finals and its 8th placing. A large culprit of its dip would be thanks to Jack Macrae and Luke Parker not featuring for most of the year, but they've been traded in the AFL and can easily rebound to their lofty heights. The 2023 Grand Finalists still have all the pieces, and we can add to that Neale, Salem and a re-invented Ed Langdon in 2025. In fact, along with its HGA, I have them scoring the most based on last years averages in Round 1! Although, with 8 players in its best XV 29 or older, I'm cautious that some may decline... but failing that, the Wolves can feel they can go all the way in 2025.

The Samurai must frustrate its coach to no end, as they can clearly do more than what they're producing... and it seems to be a habit of its past decade. But in 2025 there is genuine cause for optimism, having now secured the genuine ruck it famously missed for all of 2024. They also looked so much better when Will Aschcroft returned, only this time, he has a whole pre-season behind him. Come on Tokyo, now is the time.

... or maybe from next week, as the Wolves look ominous in this one, and Tokyo hasn't beaten them since 2016!

132024New York1402Dublin1261141

It's hard to put a finger on New York. In the 2023 trade period, it traded hard, giving up decent medium and long term prospects for the likes of Neale and Coniglio to push it up the ladder in 2024, but it wasn't enough as the top-half of the comp posted a 3-to-4 win gap on the best of the rest. New York seemingly opted to double-down on its strategy pursuing Matt Crouch and giving up it's future 1st to do so, before pivoting mid-trade period towards more youthful options at the expense of the aforementioned Crouch, Neale and Coniglio. What it has left is a nice looking half a XV, and another half... which COULD actually work out, but not without some doubt.

Dublin flirted with an aggressive 2024 trade period, but ultimately opted to stay the course and as a result might not have the cattle to make August, but it's hard not star gaze at some of its prospects which will clearly propel it for years to come; potentially to the dizzying heights of its last decade. In fact, they've got a case that it might contend for August this year, depending on whether some of its prospects break out earlier than anticipated.

New York have the wood on Dublin, having won 6 in a row against them. Based on last years averages, I have New York winning on HGA, but I think it's a genuine 50/50 game and one I think Dublin could pinch off New York.

The Royals have been stuck in this rung for a while now, patiently waiting for the likes of Sam Darcy, Darcy Wilmot and Jhye Clark to take the next step. Having drafted Sam Lalor, Leo Lombard and Isaac Kako to combine with the returning (eventually) Keidean Coleman, and the acquired Tanner Bruhn, there is something to work with at London. For 2025, a large reliance will be put on its 1 star player in Tim English who is the only Royal to have averaged more than 93 in 2024, and thus I think it could expect again to finish bottom 4.

It faces a team that will definitely finish bottom 4 however in PNL, having taken the not uncommon route of conceding its short term prospects for the chance at building long term dominance. Whilst the players and picks it has been able to acquire are nothing to be sneezed at... Zach Merrett, Lachlan Ash and Adam Cerra are its only players of note in 2025, and perhaps its only players that will average past 80 this year. I'm forecasting an all time low year for PNL.

London will win this match comfortably, even without English.

142024Beijing1308Berlin1091217

Beijing are entering year 2 of a painful rebuild, who like its opponents and PNL, have conceded it has no hope to challenge in the short term so it may as well trade accordingly. The Pandas parting of Brodie Grundy was also the parting of its only 2024 player to average past 90 last year, leaving it without a worthy choice to carry the burden of captaincy. Some tidy trading saw them take its favourite draft prospect - FOS - at Pick 4 as opposed to its former Pick 1, allowing it to also nab Xavier Lindsay at Pick 12 who is a chance to feature in this match-up. These will likely be the positives of what is a grim year to come.

Berlin meanwhile is entering year 3 of its painful rebuild, and I consider my list reflecting that compared to Beijing. Although a bottom 4 finish is expected and so trading its future 1st for Ridley was an expensive trade, but having acquired three top 7 picks last year, it continues to collect meaningful players for its rise up the ladder. I am bias, but I expect Berlin to improve more than most expect, with 3 established stars in Ridley, Rowell and Jackson, and a host of players with strong cases to rapidly improve on its 2024 averages.

I have me beating the Pandas by 100SC based on last years averages, and I'm expecting it too.
