WXV 2022 Rising Star

I think many would have thought a vote wasn't necessary this year. It was one of the most impressive seasons ever by a first year player in their teens, so much so that he was even selected for captaincy duties!

Congratulations to Nick Daicos (Rome)!

Rome is fast becoming the best identifier of talent, claiming back-to-back Rising Stars following Errol Gulden's win in 2021 and also 3rd place with Heath Chapman! They also had 3 other nominations in 2022... is this the beginning of another Roman Empire?

Toronto's Jai Newcombe was a reasonably close 2nd to Daicos, posting a very impressive season himself.

Quote from: Purple 77 on August 22, 2019, 09:42:04 PM
In previous years, the All-Worlds team was put to vote by the community. However, this year I have determined the All-Worlds team because its kinda clear for the most part, except for the bottom 5 players or so.

To qualify for the All-Worlds team, you'd have needed to play at least 12 senior games. The following analysis has been done from the 17 H&A season rounds, inclusive of reserves scores (this is consistent with previous years).

Defenders
I produced a rank for each defender according to the total points they scored compared to all other defenders (rank 'X'). Separately, I produced a rank for each defender according to their average points per game (rank 'Y').

I multiplied X and Y together, to produce Z. I then sorted 'Z' by smallest to largest. The top 4 defenders made the All-Worlds team.

For example, Shannon Hurn had the 2nd highest average for all defenders. X = 2.
But, he had the 8th highest total points scored. Y = 8.
Z = 2 x 8 = 16

16 was the 3rd lowest score, meaning he is named as D3.

This method thus takes into account both games played and points per game.

Midfielders, Rucks and Forwards
See 'Defenders'

Utilities
See 'Defenders', except all players are compared to each other regardless of position.

Captain & Vice Captain
Were those with the best overall ranking. Don't worry, this was clear no matter what angle you cut it.

And then there were 6...

With only 2 rounds to go, only 6 players can win the Jim Stynes medal from here. Mills has been in the top 2 since Round 6, and surpassed by Oliver whom only had 7 votes after Round 9!

Or will All-Worlds captain Lachie Neale storm home and take James home for the 2nd time?

LETS FIND OUT.. right after the Coaches Award...

The WXV Coaches Award

I asked everyone to nominate a player on their list - i.e., their coaches award winner - and for everyone to vote on a 3-2-1 basis on these players.

I can't recall a closer count than this one! Only 2 votes separated the top 3, but after a careful re-count, I can confirm the WXV Coaches Award winner goes to...

Jack Sinclair (New Delhi)!

A previously untradeable commodity due to a sensational lack of appeal or job security, Jack Sinclair's breakout year brought upon a whopping 27.4 increase in average points per game in 2022, enough to earn him the "D1" spot in the All-Worlds team. He can be quickly associated with New Delhi's own change in fortunes in 2022, whom themselves had a resurgent year which earned kilbluff the Coach of the Year honours.

The Coach of the Year and Coaches Award double! Not sure that has happened before!

Congratulations again to New Delhi
