Definitely the second. Looks a lot safer.

The only thing I dont like about the 2nd one is the two rookies on field down forward...  :-\
Bit hard to say at this point but Rankine/King both look like locks and there is always a handful of other forward rookies to pick from as well. I think it will end up being okay.

Just aim to upgrade your forward line first to get the rookies off the field.

Also just work out which rookies will start in defence or forward as you have the option to move Hill forward if more defensive rookies start.

Yeah definitely too early to tell, fingers crossed its not like last year, huge lack of rookies!

I really appreciate all your comments and feedback so far, had a few play arounds, and I think I've finally found a middle ground to it all. Gone for a stricter GnR approach with two exceptions.

Really like my defence, forward, ruck line. Conigs is a loss to the mid, but I think I can get away with it given the strength of the rookies available here.

Always been a fan of the 3/1/4 structure in defence and forward, worked well for me in previous years. Would have liked a 5th premo in the mids, but something has to give to allow Gawn/Grundy combo in.

It’s amazing what Rowell at M5 does in terms of strengthening your other lines. I like it a lot more than I thought I would.

The question becomes have you got enough players who will earn you over 100 points per game

Yeah, that was my first thought too! Not to mention it also allows me to have rookies like Stephens and Serong.  :D

Got at least 12 in my current side. Swapping Gawn for NicNat would give me 13 though.

No Nakia again. Maybe I am the one off base here. He is extremely injury prone.

Cockatoo needs to average 55.2 to make 150K as a rookie. If you think he can do this then he could be a good pick. Only in 2016 however did if average more, 63.2 that year from 11 games. Rowell needs to average 66.2 which will also be challenging but not impossible. People should not expect another Walsh like performance. A 102,400 priced rookie only needs to average 46.7 to make 150K.

Nakia Cockatoo hasn't been in any of my sides...  ???

Just heard Jack Steven has injured his calf....

Hmm, might have to shuffle some things around, or just swap Steven for Smith.

And now Isaac Heeney...  :(

Well....back to the drawing board. Here I thought this was going to be the year when I didnt make over 1000 changes before pre-season matches kicked off....  ::)

I believe this structure will become more common as the pre-season goes on:

i.e.

Rowell @ M5

This allows for Docherty at D3 & Heeney (or similar) at F3.

It's the rookies behind Rowell that makes this structure appealing. With a premium M5, and Rowell at M6, you're omitting Stephens/Serong/McHenry etc. But I have more confidence in these Rookies than all of Doedee/Robertson/Stephen Hill, and Steven/Devon Smith.

Going with Rowell at M5 / Docherty at M3 / Heeney (or similar) F3/... allows me to choose only one of Doedee/Robertson + Stephen Hill (who can easily become Young or Zerk-Thatcher), and on the Forward line (Steven or Smith, or neither).

Rowell at M6 (assuming you have five ultra premium mids + Grundy/Gawn + Whitfield/Martin) means you're starting with most of these speculative mid-pricers... and I think there's zero chance they're ALL going to come off.

I have two reservations about this structure of Rowell at M5:

1. It means only 12 keepers (most of which are ultra premiums)
You'd normally want at least 13 keepers, with 19-20 trades to complete your team.

2. Four rookie mids:
Assuming you upgrade to an ultra-premium, you normally need 3 trades to complete one rookie mid upgrade... that's 12 trades just to complete your midfield

However, everyone running a structure of 13 or 14 keepers is more than likely counting Steven & Smith and Roberton & Doedee as keepers. I don't believe ALL these players will develop into keepers. You need to minimise your risk by limiting yourself to two of them (to allow for sideways movement).

Running with Rowell at M5 essentially means you're betting against ALL those mid-pricers coming off; and managers will need to expend correction trades on players they counted as keepers at the start.

As it stands, I have Rowell at M5.

Well, I knew it was always too good to be true to have a side practically locked this early on.

Injury (setbacks) to a number of players have forced me to have a rethink, and I've kinda done a full 360.

I'm still going to keep an eye on the likes of Heeney, Buddy, Steven and Gawn, but for now they are all out in favour of others.

With Gawn out and Nic Nat in, it allows for the return of Rowell at M6 and Coniglio at M5.
