This is what my team looks like by selecting every player over $600k (nine players) other than the injured Mitchell and Kelly:

DEF: Lloyd, Z.Williams, B.Smith, Scrimshaw, Clark, Duursma (Burgess, Hore)

MID: Macrae, Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, Neale, Walsh, Butters, Constable (Drew, Scott, Gibbons)

RUC: Grundy, Gawn (Bines)

FWD: Danger, Heeney, Mundy, Moore, Setterefield, Balta (Petruccelle, Parker)

Only $4,200 left

I don't see any problems other than maybe my DEF line is a little thin and not much cash left.

I'm looking for some convincing arguments why I shouldn't do it.

Can't really fault it apart from the obvious weaker defenders like you mentioned.  Solid midfield too, Fyfe surely will miss games at some point based on history.  Could turn him into another keeper to save a trade later down the track.

Fyfe is risky I agree and I only put him in there because he was over $600k as part of the experiment, but Kelly is also an option above 600k or I can always go with a number of choices in the 500K range.

I could also drop Fyfe for Libba and drop Hore for Mills to bolster the defence making B.Smith D4
