When it's okay to trade sideways

Why to trade Hibberd....
He has started with 74 and 72 and has a BE of 175 this week.

Last year I had these guys and persisted with them against better judgement.
The lessons of 2017 are telling me Hibberd has to go. Here's why...

Hannebery started with 52 and 71 in Rounds 1 & 2, originally priced at $616k and after stringing some good scores together running till mid season he faded and scored horribly in the latter half of the year to only average 97 for the year.

Treloar started with 96, 108, 108 and 72 in R1-4, originally priced at $605k and although he went 100+ 11 times throughout the year he proved to another disappointing pick, only averaging 101 for the year.

Shaw satrted the year with 118, 53, 89, 79 in R1-4, originally priced at $576. After these 4 games he was $499k and from there just kept bleeding cash to end the year less than $400k, having scored only 3 100+s for the year.

Dahlhaus.... was a different story in that he started the year well (averaged 109 by R7) but when he fell from grace mid year and loomed as a good pick up on the cheap he continued to score like a spud (only 3 of 15 games at 100+).

I'm going to trade Hibberd out for Shaw. (I have Simmo already) Also pockets $87,100.
I understand the chasing points argument and don't trade premos/stick fat, etc. but as the above shows it's not always the right thing to do.

Good luck to those keeping Hibberd and to those intending to pick him up on the cheap. It may work for you but I'm moving on.

I am all for trading hard and trading early, if it feels right go for it. He who hesitates is lost (or last!).

Yes it's more than a game, but it is a game after all :)

I am all for sideways trading in Rd 3 or 4 if a corrective trade warranted.

I have done Lambert to Westhoff as a correction trade and more than likely will do Beams to Coniglio.  If happy with rookies then why not correct underperforming premos.

Usually allow 2/3 correctional trades early so if it fits strategy go for it.

Agree. 30 trades allows aggressive trading. It’s important to be selective about trades or you will run out with some rounds to go but think it’s the right philosophy to have when playing SC.

Back your gut.

I'm going Hibberd + Lambert to Simpson + Cogs. Feels right.

Like MontyJnr said in another thread we used to build complete teams from 20 or so trades years ago

30 trades gives you room to make a few prem trades, and considering most of us have nailed the rookies where we would usually use 2-3 on rookie corrections most people are only needing 1-2 now

Just remember, this is a game after all, it's supposed to be fun and if you want or don't want a player in your side anymore then go for it and make the trade

Beams is another good case. He’s probably my all time fave SC player and I started him this year but have already traded him out (last week for Danger) That call along with Naughton to Bonner netted me about 100 extra points on the weekend.
So Hibberd will be my second traded out premo of 2018. Unreal. At least I think I’ve got my other picks right. Crossing fingers and toes.

That's the key word for me. These rookies have put up huge numbers and the way they are going, it'll be 1 down, 2/3 up allowing us to upgrade faster. Especially with a lot of people picking up 400k forwards that look like going 90+ which has let us squeeze in an extra premium from the get go.

Exact reason I'm trading Bont to Simmo via Finlayson DPP, and Dogs look terrible in general.

SilverLion

I can see the reasoning, but you pick a premo for a reason. In this case, if Shaw and Simmo continue their form, then they become upgrade targets to have alongside Hibberd, rather than bring them in now and possibly make Hibberd the upgrade target.

Excluding injuries, sideways trades always feel like wasted trades IMO.

FTR, I had Shaw and Treloar from start to finish last year, and they both ended up on my bench in the final few rounds. However, the points they did provide and the couple of trade saved by keeping them proved worth it.

The answer to your question is round 3 and byes

Goosey

I'm persisting with Bont, but have traded B.Ellis to Simpson to alleviate the frustration of the first two weeks. I hope it helps reduce my blood pressure.

Some great points in here boys!

Definitely remember the days of 24 trades, feel like it was a lifetime ago though..

Hibberd out for Oliver for me. Want to get another gun (and POD) midfielder in to attack the top 2,000 ranks. Happy starting Doedee, Murray and Finlayson with Bonner at D3.

I've gone very hard in previous years with 30 trades to make rank up with trades only to crash hard when I run out with 5-6 weeks to go.

I am going against the grain this year. Being ranked 218th after the first 2 rounds means I'm not panicking I guess. I'm planning not to go as hard with my trades, let the appropriate cows make the coin I need them to make and pick off the cheap premos. I'm going to for now also hold my premo selections which started poor. I'm holding Hibberd for now. He is a concern but 2 weeks isn't enough of a sample for me to think he is a must to move on.
