Unofficial and Unapproved ASC Round Two Preview

Our first game sees the promising Sinners travel to Denver to play the Avalanche, who looked a bit more like a snowball in round one. The Sinners were good, but will be looking to have more consistency across their XVIII rather than just relying on Mitchell and Franklin to generate bulk points. The Avalanche are a young side and expecting them to compete strongly this week is a little harsh, but they'll be looking for good signs from their young stars like their ABCD combo - Banfield Cerra Dow.

Next Wisconsin host Quito in a contest that also probably won't be too close, especially with the backline injuries the Quetzals have right now. You never know of course, and Wisconsin are due for some bad mojo after their fluke win in round one, but the Quetzals will probably need a dozen between Cameron and Lynch and some nice disposal numbers in the middle and down back. Cockerels star ruckman Max Gawn will be looked on to lead again, while they'll want big improvement from Dayne Zorko - or else he might go down the Steve Smith path of losing the captaincy and his spot in the side...

The third game for the week may not be match of the round, but it's close to it. Houston may have gone down softly in week one, but I'll back them to bounce back with a better score. Carolina were good without being spectacular in round one (would've lost to SF and Boston!), and will welcome in Tim Kelly for his first game - let's hope not playing him last week doesn't hurt their percentage enough to make a difference in 4 months' time! Dusty vs Sloane, Beams vs Shiel, Murphy vs Kelly, Zaharakis vs Bontempelli, Kreuzer vs Grundy...game on!

Fourth we have the Otters, who were impressive last week despite going down on the road, stay in California, flying from Anaheim to San Francisco to go up against the Grizzlies who'll want vengeance after last week's disappointing loss. SFG will be sweating on Scully's health to offset the losses of Viney, Pittard and Williams for significant time, but should be in the driver's seat to win this game at home...unless Treloar and Naitanui can go bang.

Fifth is a clear match-of-the-round for me - Anaheim go across the country to play Boston. Merrett and Dangerfield will (probably) be back for Anaheim, while the Terriers will (probably) regain Hall and Gray, and will hope their defense and overall depth improve from last week. Who wins? Home ground advantage will help the Terriers, but I reckon Anaheim might just be able to outgun them - but a tie would be neat!

Finally, we have another decent match-up - Chicago hosting New Brooklyn in a clash between two 2017 bottom-six sides looking to press for finals (and beyond?) in 2018. Oliver, Parker and JPK against Cripps, Crouch and Acres is a very nice midfield match-up, and both teams have players at either end who could certainly swing things for them. Ryder out will hurt the Sharks, but they do have a very competent second ruckman in Sinclair who will certainly have his hands full with Sauce Jacobs. Very hard to pick this match...sharks just...maybe...


Couple of random observations
1. In round one, every club who won in the league competition also won in the ressies. Coincidence? Probably...
2. Thanks to various relocations over the years, we're up to ten clubs in the USA and eleven clubs in North America, compared to just the one South American club in Quito, thanks to the relocation or extinction of the Panama Tigers, Peruvian Panthers, Santiago Cockerels and Otters, plus the Alberta Rockies and Montreal Canadiens from the North. South America Quetzals for a name change, perhaps?
3. In round one, San Francisco had nine players named in the best, good for tied-16th all-time and the record for the most in a losing side.
4. Our league sides averaged 113.5 points each in round one, compared to 114.16 last season overall and 113.58 in round one last year. In 2016 our highest round one scorer scored 128 points, while in 2017 it was 127 points - our lowest was 91 in both seasons!
