With teams now starting to finish off their competitive preseason matches, it’s a good time to start looking at the possibilities for each team.

Richmond First, North Later - They have a very settled lineup with limited opportunities for rookies to break into the side. There are really only a couple of positions that are not nailed down.

How I see it
Back â€" Alex Rance | Dylan Grimes | OPEN POSITION
Half Back â€" Bacher Houli | Nick Vlaustin | Brandon Ellis
C â€" Kamdyn Mcintosh | Trent Cotchin | Dustin Martin
HF â€" Kane Lambert | Josh Caddy | Shai Bolton
F â€" Jack Riewoldt | Dan Butler | Jacob Castagna
FOL â€" Toby Nankervis | Shaun Grigg | Dion Prestia (INJURY)
I/C â€" David Astbury | Shane Edwards | Jacob Townsend | Daniel Rioli (INJURY)

Prestia has a hamstring injury and is unlikely to lineup round 1, but should be back early in the season. This will likely open up a few opportunities for Caddy to have extra midfield minutes in the early season, but not long term.

Houli has calf soreness, but expected to be back

Rioli has a broken foot so there is one spot in the FWD line. Bolton looks to have locked in this position.

So there are 3 spots open in the lineup for round 1. Defence is being fought out between Broad, Conca, Short & C Ellis. At this stage I would think Conca or Short are the most likely. In any case all 4 have shaky JS.

I believe Jack Graham & Sam Lloyd are in the best positions to take the other positions.  With Fringe options for those that miss out on the def spot and players like Miles & Menadue.

There is going to be limited opportunities for Rookies at Richmond this year and if any do come in they will have shaky JS given the depth of the Richmond List.

Open position definitely belongs to Astbury... One of the best defensive backs in the league, Rance rarely takes best key forward. Bench for Astbury is an insult.

Basically rules out selecting C Ellis then. No way he is a lock in that side.

I reckon C. Ellis is a lock to play Round 1. After that depends on performance. Hardwick said they like the ball in his hands so IF he gets enough of it (probs 15 disp. at a minimum you would think) & stays fit he will keep his spot imo. Not much room for error though.

Ellis will be the first guy dropped if he plays a poor game, very risky at his price.

His JLT stat line is what I would expect from him. 12-15 possessions. at 65-70% DE with a few clearances, tackles, R50 & I50's
This would be around that 70 SC mark. So not out of realm of possibility he averages 75 with a few 90s & a few 55s.

At $228k though are you willing to take that risk on a player who really is in a massive fight for a position in the first place.
If he s named R1, being first match do you lock him in.
IMO no as I cannot be confident he will be able to hold his spot and at 230k I don't want him sitting on the bench as a donut. If he averages 75 he probably makes 100k so payoff is not that great. Different story if he was 123k-150k, and named. id lock that in straight away even with the JS risk.

He is in a fight with 5 other capable guys for the same spot.

Norths turn. For a low end of the table team, they have quite a few players that I feel are fairly well locked into their side.

How I see it
Back â€" Robbie Tarrant | Scott D Thompson | Ryan Clarke
Half Back â€" Marley Williams | Jamie Macmillian | Luke Mcdonald
C â€" Ben Cunnington | Jack Ziebell | Billy Hartung
HF â€" Shaun Atley | Nathan Hrovat | Kayne Turner
F â€" Jarrod Waite | Ben Brown | Taylor Garner
FOL â€" Todd Goldstein | Shaun Higgins | Trent Dumont
I/C â€" Ben Jacobs | Mason Wood | OPEN POSITION | OPEN POSITION

Fringe - Ed Vickers-Willis, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Mitchell Hibberd, Majak Daw, Sam Durdin, Braydon Preuss, Jed Anderson, Jy Simpkin, Cameron Zuhaar, Ben Mckay

Prior to looking at the North lineup I was thinking that there was quite a few positons that would be up for grabs, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Wood, Garner, Simpkin all returned from injuries in JLT 2, id say Wood and Garner are best 22 while Simpkin in Fringe.

North is in a fairly good position injury wise with Sam Wright, Declan Mountford & jed Anderson the only real injury concerns, yet none of those are best 22, but are rather fringe/depth options

I believe that EVW has shown enough to get one of the 2 open spots ahead of Mitchell Hibberd, while LDU is likely to be in position for the other. You could also see people like Clarke, Garner, Jacobs or Wood miss out depending on the matchups and the desire to play an extra Tall.
Preuss would currently be ahead of Daw for that position given his effectiveness in the ruck, note though that Ben Brown & Scott Thompson were pinch-hitting in the ruck when in Fwd & Defence. So I feel that option is being explored instead of 2 talls.

For Zuhaar, Mckay, Hibberd, Murphy it is likely they will need some injuries to be able to break into the side, R1 might be too early.

So LDU is the only rookie priced I would expect a R1 debut, I would be expecting something between a 50-65 average, with solid, but not rock solid JS. For a mid only at 189k the potential for Cash Generation he isn’t all that great for his scoring potential, might make anywhere from 100-180k if he gets a sustained run, but Im not 100% confident of that. This is one that for me is a option only if other rookies don’t look likely.

Spite

@LS they love Simpkin sooooo much, he is probably best 22 when he's fit, they want to pump games in him and compare him to boomer all the time.

Other than that opinion, reckon you are spot on here

True, he is probably at that same level as Wood etc where he might come in and out for matchups, personally I think he is behind those others for best 22, but wouldn't surprise me if he got in.

We need a write up on every team. This is flowering brilliant, and both Richmond's and North's have been absolutely bang on imo.

While I'm on North: Marley Williams- sneaky POD? Possible reward may not be worth the risk.

First round 2 years ago for GWS, 2 knee reco's since, hasn't played JLT. Right now I wouldn't put him as Fringe as I don't see him ahead of any of those other players for R1

Hes been injured for something like 18 months, while he was best 22 when fit, there is no guarentees that when he gets his body right he will be able to lock down a position. Fringe at best.
