Toby Greene is someone that most of us love to hate. SC owners are often frustrated by his temper outbursts and unpredictable behaviour that have seen him cop suspensions and left us swearing that we'll never own him again.

In 2018 with so few proven, trustworthy premium options to choose he is worthy of at least some thought and discussion.
In 2018 there are only 10 forward options who averaged 90+ last year. Of those three are key forwards, who many rule a line straight through for that reason. They are JJK who'll likely win the Coleman again, Buddy who is a roller coaster and Dixon. Dixon also has the R10 bye as do Wingard and Gray who also feature in these top 10 forwards I'm talking about. Factoring in this "Doughnut" that takes care of 5 of these blokes. Menegola at 551k is too expensive to start IMO and I'll make a call on him as the season unfolds and Dahlhaus was unspectacular last season and has frightened me off. If he returns to past glory I'll look at bring him in at some point as well. That leaves Heeney, Billings and Greene as my preferred expensive fwd options.

Greene can score super quick. He has a large ceiling and would be a scary sight to see in the opposition's line up as a POD. He will average well and if he plays 20+ games he will be one of the top forward picks in 2018.
I'm leaning towards, starting him. GWS have a soft draw at the start of the season. They only play 1 opponent who featured in last year's finals in their first 7 games. Compare that Sydney who have 5 of 6 opponents early on who played finals last year. Isaac Heeney looking at you here haha... who has had off season surgery too.

Thoughts welcome.

I am thinking that he should be in my team from the start not real keen on loading my FWD's with cheaper and mid priced players start with 3 guns that should be the highest scoring forwards you want them eventually so why not start them just all comes down to available rookies really  :)

I want to pick him, but I usually try to pick FWD/MID's to make sure scoring can be spread across accumulating possessions and not just relying on forward marks and goals (as well as DPP status), do we think that Greene will get time up the ground or is he a permanent forward? I guess the same thought goes for Billings too. My initial inclination is to pick Heeney/Dahlhaus types but I am very interested in Greene/Billings.

Peter

I am not so sure their first seven games are that easy - Sydney at SCG, Geelong in Geelong, St Kilda at Etihad, Bulldogs who usually start well and Collingwood at MCG - good luck with those

As I've mentioned elsewhere, he is one of the forwards worth considering, which is kinda sad if you think about it. Not going to start him, but will bring him in during the year if his form warrants it (ala Yeo last year).

Greene is well worth starting.   A different approach from mrp this year may benefit him when "occassional" lost the plot episode strikes.    Also he is getting older and hopefully maturing.   I know my 25yr old son is more restrained now than a few years ago.
scoring is not greene's selection risk playing 20+ games is!   on the downside, if he goes it is an automatic 3 weeks now.

Sadly this year he is really worth a look at starting from round 1.

Positives:
Based on average was the 4th highest scorer last year
Has averaged over 100 before so he is possible of doing it again
Contract season which means he has a point to prove. Think Kelly last year ;)
He is 25 and going into his prime
GWS as a team are going into there prime which means they will be contenders again this year
Changes to MRP rule make him less likely to get suspended.

Negatives:
Out of anyone in the AFL he is most likely to get suspended.
Changes to the MRP means he is likely to get suspended for longer if he does get suspended
He is a player that is easy to dislike so you may not want to start him for that reason haha

He is in my side and will probably stay in there. Heeney, Franklin, Greene and Billings are the only 4 im considering at the moment and I have went with the first 3.

Lobb being the potential number 1 ruck at GWS is the only thing that will stop me starting him at this stage.

If we were guaranteed that Greene was not going to get suspended then he would be the first picked forward in a lot of teams. I am happy to take the risk at this point in time.

Agreed.

Lock.

If he gets suspended so be it. 18-19 games averaging potentially 100+ is definitely worth picking him.

I reckon he’ll play mostly as a forward but he’ll still score well enough. If you have him for the duration he should serve you well. He’s a good user and proven scorer. The goals will come and so will the SC points.
Billings will be played more as a mid this year I reckon.

Thinking the same. But hope it doesn’t come down to 18 games.

I think Billings will have free rein of the field like Heeney does. Hopefully, Greene’s tank will improve so he can be a moving target, rather than having to rove off Patton and Cameron, as well as put some forward pressure. Imo that is why he got frustrated and did silly things; just not fit enough

Toby ran a 15.2 beep test at the combine in his draft year and regularly finishes in the top 5 at the Giants in their time trials. I don't think fitness is a worry.

Kelly, Ward, Shiel, Coniglio, Hopper, Scully, Whitfield, Griffen, Setterfield with Taranto, Williams and a host of others capable of going through there as well. He's not getting near the midfield. He's an AA half forward. He ranks elite (or close to) in pretty much every category for his position.

Will he kick more goals? he already averages 3 per game. He even managed to reduce his clangers per game from last year (but still ranks top 20 in the competition out of players who have played at least 10 games) and goes at 60% DE. I don't see how he can possibly improve on what he did last season playing the same kind of role so all I'm seeing is downside here.

SydneyRox

Lock him in.

Like others have said, if you knew he was going to play 22 games, then he would already be locked into most teams.

looking for him to mature a touch and stay out of the MRP trouble, and I think he can

Although he may not improve much I don't see him getting any worse either.

He is 25 and in his prime and it is his contract year as well.

He is locked and loaded in my side.

I hope he has less than 10% ownership and that he can be a nice little pod for me.

Peter

I have no doubt he is quick, but the mind says don’t chase unless I have to; unless delivered on a platter, I’m not chasing. So many times in 2017 did we see it on TV
