Will start the year as the highest price FWD ($551,800), averaged 100.4 last year which is over 2pts higher than the next most expensive forward (Franklin, 98.3, $540,500)

I know I'll be picking him from the get go, but I am worried about how the inclusion of Ablett will impact his role in the side.

I can see him potentially being the Macrae of 2018, but I can also see him being the Caddy of 2018 as well...

Probably an upgrade target for mine, but we shall see - big fan of how the kid can score

LordSneeze

Consistent scorer who gets points in multiple ways. Im locking him in as im confident he will be top 6, but I could see why people would wait and see.

He is in my current side as he should be a top 6 forward come seasons end and he could very easily take the number 1 mantle yet again. However if he seems to be playing more of a forward than midfield role with Ablett coming in then he can easily turned into a Heeney, Greene, Billings etc. before round one.

I personally think Ablett will play almost permanently as a half forward and play a similar role to what Motlop and Lang did last season and Menegola will get more midfield minutes.

Scott is a very smart coach as although he thinks about the now and wanting to win every game he also thinks about the future and it would be more beneficial for the cats in the long run to get midfield minutes into Menegola over Ablett.

Thats just my 2 cents worth anyways.

I came back here to say this exact thing, if anyone is playing fwd time its Gaz imo. He needs to preserve his body and he's an absolute gun around goals anyway. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 50/50 fwd/mid split from Gaz in 2018

Exactly. Geelong already have an elite midifeld with the likes of Danger, Selwood x2, Duncan, Menegola and Guthrie what they dont have is a crafty small forward that can play bursts in the midfield and that guy could be Ablett. I am expecting a 70/30 split with Gaz being a Stevie J type for the cats.

Nah I can't see myself starting him at that price

Scored better when Jelwood was missing, and now he has Jelwood, Ablett, Danger and Duncan with him too

Should still be fairly consistent, but I can' see enough of a reason to start him and will look to get him later as an upgrade target

Holz

Every year I seem to have one guy i go big time against the grain on, this year its Menegola

no way am i paying 550k for a guy who has played 25 games in his career

He averaged 93 with Selwood in the team in the regular season
He averaged 121 with Selwood out of the team

He averaged 85 in the finals (with selwood)

as others have said now you add Ablett into the squad.

seems absolutely insane to me to pick him up, whats the worse case in not picking him up he averages 100 again?

as long as you dont stuff up the other premo you pick instead its a few points lost. For the same price I can pick up Joel Selwood who has gone 105+ for the last 9 years with 7 of them 110+.

at his price 95 would be considered a passable mark. Danger Ablett Selwood Duncan i can see beating him in SC so barring injury can you see a 5th option at best going 95+?

He is officially Holz's Spud Pick of the year. Not saying he wont go 90+ im just not going near him with all that risk at that price.

When you put it like that ...  :(

Didn't realise how poor his average was with Selwood in the side and Ablett won't help that at all. Upgrade target for me now.

In comes Greene ;D

SilverLion

#9
Geelong's best midfield: (IMO at least, I'm not a Geelong supporter so take it with a grain of salt)

Danger (who pitches forward), Duncan, J. Selwood

Rotating with them would be:

Ablett (predominately forward, pitch in the middle, opposite to Danger), Menegola, S. Selwood, Blicavs.

The extras who come in for injuries or will be playing in other positions barring injuries:

C. Guthrie, Horlin-Smith, Murdoch

Going to be interesting to see how Scott manages the sheer quantity of midfielders. When I start to look at their list in this way, I can the possibility of many of them playing large chunks forward, Menegola included.

Edit: Also, regarding the average difference w/ and w/o Jelwood, Menegola did score a 143 in Round 23 last year which would be a significant contribution to that difference...

quinny88

Haven't even considered him to be honest. Much rather wait and see how he performs with Geelong midfield changes

enzedder

Upgrade target. Wait and see approach. Not spending big on fwds if there are sufficient rookies and one or both of Bennell and Christensen to start. Would rather use the cash to load up on an extra mid.

this guy is no caddy.    much better sc option and if game setup is not impacted by Ablett will be a top 5 fwd.   Really hope Abj is high fwd 90/10 on ball.

 :)

Upgrade target  if the Ablett inclusion helps rather than hinders him. Not prepared to risk players priced 400k upward when players such as Armytage, Jaeger, Bennell, Christensen etc are available for much cheaper. I put etc to cover any or all that I missed.

;)

meow meow

A midfielder listed as a forward, in the prime of his career, in a great team that will hog the points. Nah... pass. Why would anyone pick him when you can get a Bennell or Christensen who'll will last 3.2 matches and score like shower in the process, including their injury affected matches where they give you 18 points? Seems illogical to me.
