Attention car nuts

Im looking for a new 2nd hand car and need help. The last 2 cars i have bought have been from family members.

looking for a diesel run family car as i clock up between 800-1000kms per week.

What makes/models should i look at??
what should i stay away from??

Also i need a tow bar

Volkswagon have been making diesels for decades and have good reliable drive trains through most models, Golf also have been building them for years also and good at it, Toyota the same. Have a look at the models available in your price range through proven manufacturers see what you think mate.

Kylie is keen on the I35s but im not sold on them.

Holden Captiva looks ok

Don't buy a Captiva they are lumps of junk just google problems with Captiva's and you will see I don't know what you need to tow but if you are buying a diesel for economy all your savings will be eaten by the extra cost of servicing them if you only need to tow a small trailer I would be looking at a sedan like Mazda 6 ( my son bought a 2nd hand one recently and they are great cars ) Camry or such but don't buy a Captiva you will probably see a lot for sale for good reason  :P

Their nice cars, my sons fiance has one and very happy with it.

Was going to go out Saturday and have a look but the missus put a stop to that quick smart.

Then went out for a look on Sunday and the mazda place was shut. Went to OZCARs and picked myself up a 2015 Elantra for under $17k.

Drives like a dream, now the missus wants to update her car from a camry to a santa fe

agreed, Captiva's are garbage.
My sis-in-law has one and its been nothing but a money pit for em, but they're a "holden" family and wont look elsewhere.
<$20k  and diesel, there are plenty family type SUVs out there.

2014 Kia Sorrento, 2014 Mitsubishi ASX are probably the best, some mates got some and they go well and have no problem so far.
territory's are also decent.

in sedans there are plenty in that range.
2015 volkswagon passats, 2015 hyundai i40's, 2015 mazda 6's are also available.
