What is UTG?

The AFL Ultimate Team Game is modeled off other formats of 'Ultimate Team' for other codes, Soccer etc.
Coaches receive players in terms of 'cards', for example, Tom Mitchell has a Platinum card and James Parsons has a bronze card.
Unlike keeper formats, your side will change week to week. Coaches can buy more cards, sell cards and exchange cards for better ones.

How to Buy Cards

Every coach will be given 100 gold to begin their UTG journey. Coaches can spend this money on packs or auctions, in order to obtain cards.

Pack Types

A number of different packs exist for purchase in the UTG, listed below

  • Standard Pack
Cost 20G and contains 3 random cards and a chance at a fragment

  • Value Pack
Costs 60G and contains 12 random cards and a chance at a fragment

  • Gold Pack
Costs 35G and contains a guaranteed gold card, plus 2 random cards and a chance at a fragment

  • Fragment Pack
Costs 70G and contains a guaranteed fragment, plus 2 random cards

  • Ruck Pack
Costs 35G and contains a guaranteed silver or better ruck, plus 2 random cards and a chance at a fragment


Types of Cards

Player Cards are categorised into 4 different tiers of cards. There are bronze, silver, gold and platinum cards.

Spite has created a program that will spit out a pack based on these probabilities;

66% chance of a bronze tier card,
23.5% chance of a silver tier card,
9% chance of a gold tier card,
1.5% chance of a platinum tier card.

Note: This may be changed throughout the season to maintain game balance.

There are also special cards within these tiers.

These include two non-player cards, both of which are gold rarity;

A Captain Card, which doubles the score of a chosen player
An Extra Player card, which allows for a user to play an extra player of their choice that week

These cards are all “consumables” which means they are one time use only, however they may be the difference between winning a week and falling outside the top few.

Note: Keep an eye out for more collectible cards which may appear throughout the season.

Special Edition Cards

A Special Edition (SE) player card results in a 20% score increase for a player. However, these Special Edition cards will not appear in packs. To receive a SE card, you must exchange 3 cards of the same player. For example, if you collect 3 Marc Murphy cards, you can exchange the 3 for a Special Edition Marc Murphy. This means that Marc Murphy will get a 20% bonus to his score every week. SE cards are available for all players. SE cards are not available in packs.

Fragments
The introduction of Fragments will provide a new way for platinum players to be obtained. The 4 players that can be built from fragments are Rory Laird, Gary Ablett, Brodie Grundy and Sam Menegola. In order to claim your platinum player, coaches must collect all 4 fragments for their desired player. Fragments can be found randomly in any pack, or coaches can receive a guaranteed fragment in the Fragment Pack. Once a coach has all 4 different fragments of a player, they can exchange the fragments to receive that platinum player.

Club Sets
The following exchanges can be made when all players involved are from the same AFL club:

3 x Bronze Players for 1 x Random Silver Player
4 x Silver Players for 1 x Random Gold Player
5 x Gold Players for 1 x Random Platinum Player

For example,
exchanged Nathan Broad + Oleg Markov + Noah Balta and received Alex Rance
Alex Rance + Jacob Townsend + Jack Riewoldt + Jacob Townsend and received Trent Cotchin
Trent Cothin + Shaun Grigg + Toby Nankervis + Kane Lambert + Shaun Grigg and received Dustin Martin

Each team set can only be completed once per coach.
The only set that cannot be completed to platinum is North Melbourne


Scoring System and Rewards (how to earn gold)

Each week, users will name their team in the appropriate thread. They will have to name;

2 defenders,
3 midfielders,
1 ruckman and
2 forwards.

and also 1 emergency of each position, if you have the cards to do so.

Note: Once team sizes have expanded appropriately, we will be naming,
3 defenders,
4 midfielders,
1 ruckman and
3 forwards.

These players will score points based on the DT (Dreamteam) scoring system.

You cannot name the same card multiple times, even if you have more than one copy of it.

Note: 2 different users are able to have the same card and both name it in their side.

If a user wishes to use a “consumable” card, such as a Captain Card, they must state it when posting their team and also name their captain (or in other cases, extra player). There will be no week-to-week Captains, unless a team has a Captain Card consumable to use.

The top scoring teams each week win gold, depending on their placement.

1st place will earn 100 gold,
2nd place will earn 80 gold,
3rd place will earn 70 gold,
4th place will earn 60 gold,
5th-8th place will earn 50 gold,
9th onwards will earn 40 gold for participation

The Finals Series
To determine our UTG Season 3 champion, the Finals Series will occur over the final four weeks of the regular season. All coaches will participate in the knockout bracket, so anyone can take the cake. However, to reward the coaches who have succeeded throughout the regular season, the top four positions will be seeded. The seeding will be determined by the following:

1) Total # of First Place Weekly Finishes from Primary Fixture
2) 2nd place - Total # of First Place Weekly Finishes from Primary Fixture
3) Total Points Scored from Primary Fixture
4) 2nd place - Total Points Scored from Primary Fixture

Obviously, there’s a fair chance that these will overlap, so total points may be counted back to third and/or fourth place if necessary to determine the top 4 seeds. Seeded coaches will get a rest in Round 20, while the other eight coaches will be randomly distributed into the first round of the bracket.

Auction House


Once a week, card(s) will go up for sale for all coaches to bid on. At a random time on Thursday, the auction will end and the card will go to the user with the highest bid. Some weeks, there will also be a “Buy it now” option for users to purchase the card immediately and stop the auction process.

The reason for a random time is to stop people “sniping” the auction at the last minute and causing chaos, and to also ensure that the winner of the auction can use their card in the upcoming week.

Trading in cards to upgrade them

Users may trade in their unwanted cards to upgrade to a random card of the higher tier with varying rates.

Trading in 5 bronze tier cards will get you 1 silver tier card.
Trading in 6 silver tier cards will get you 1 gold tier card.
Trading in 7 gold tier cards will get you 1 platinum tier card. 
For example, 5 bronze cards may be traded in to get 1 silver card at random.


Selling Cards for Gold


Finally, cards can be sold back for some gold. Different tiers have different rates. The rates vary with % chance so at the moment the rates are as follows;

1 Bronze tier card = 3 gold (until end of Round 2, then will be 2 gold)
1 Silver Tier card = 5 Gold
1 Gold Tier Card = 12 Gold
1 Platinum Tier Card = 50 Gold
