Poll needs "other" added to it. I guarantee that there's going to be a player outside of this list that ends up in the top 8. Could be Mills, could be Josh Smith, could be Cutler, could be Dawson.

Hurley?

Anybody else looking at Mills and Josh Smith.    Both are options capable of stepping up this year.    Generally I am playing safe with 3 of Joey, laird, Adams, TMac to start and then Doc, Simmo, Shaw mid season upgrades.      If money gets tight will also consider Mills, Josh Smith, Hibberd and after watching KK and clarifying his role is appropriate to SC scoring.

Also Jake LLoyd captured my eye in JLT and end of last year.   Just concerned he wont get enough mid time to match those scores come the real thing.

Why do people honestly feel the need to go for mid priced defenders this year? it blows my mind.

not only are there a plethora of gun defenders available this year but there seems a LOT of defender rookies also.

makes so much more sense to go gun rookie down back and try your luck on mid priced options on other lines in the form of Sandi Swallow beams murph Rough etc where the good standout picks aren't so obvious.

Mills Smith hibberd KK really? beats me. Won't get ANYWHERE close to top 10 defenders. there were 15 blokes over a 90 average last year, 4 over 103. Burgyone was tenth with a 94.8 average. I daresay to reach top 10, the avg will increase this year.

doc shaw adams laird rance joey HH Simmo hodge howe JJ TMac Boyd pittard vince will be your top averaging players no doubt about it. gotta choose from that list IMO

This is the major issue with newer coaches I feel (not putting you in that basket, Wato!) Last year's points have been and gone, whilst they may form the basis for some statistical trends over the course of a few years, there are no guarantees. If the same top 10 were to be repeated each year then there'd be no skill involved in SC and everyone's teams would look the same! If it was that simple, everyone would lock away Goldy and Gawn and throw away the keys ;)
Simpson and Shaw for example, are among the oldest players in their respective teams. There will come a season where they definitely WON'T be in the top 10 - see McVeigh from last year, who people picked as a 'certainty' to be among the top defenders because he'd produced good numbers in the past... GAJ has been a shadow of himself in recent years as his game count and averages have plummeted. JJ is another you mentioned, why would he be a certainty to be top-10? A few decent scores last year before he injured himself? That's it. Potentially an outlier as far as his seasonal output goes, though admittedly he's young and has a SC-friendly role.

Agree however re: mid-priced defender comment, better options elsewhere this year for sure!

Is anyone starting Simmo?

Don't think I've seen him in any teams, and I think I might start him for the POD

I was just looking over his stats, and geeez he's incredible. In the last 11 years of footy he has missed 3 games, and last year his lowest score for the year was 84, and he went under 90 only 4 times (all in the mid to high 80's)

What a man!

I'm picking him for just how much of a good bloke he is!

Yep he's my POD starter. Think he'll average over 100 again with very small deviation in his scores. Docherty should get more attention out of the two. Locked away

I had both him and Doc at D1 and D2. He has had one soft tissue injury in his career (calf a couple seasons ago) and the other games he missed were due to a Wellingham cheap shot. It helps when you average 90 every season.

Only reason he isn't in my team now is because of funds.

I think Kade's overpriced by about 10-15 points this year, thus he won't be starting in my squad. Nearly 10 years of consistent 90-95 scoring, and all of a sudden he pumps out a 106 season at the age of 32/33... Too much of an outlier for my liking.

I reckon your right, he is over priced. but in saying that a defender who constantly pumps out 90s is what you want. save some early money and upgrade to him later if hes still performing

This is my view on Doc, Simmo and Shaw.       Start three of the 500k approx guys and get these as upgrades when they drop down to 500k...      No defender is worth the risk associated with almost 600k.

LordSneeze

Totally agree on Doc & Simmo, both are overpriced and somewhat unknown for what they will produce this year.
Shaw to me is a safe bet and worth his price.
Adams too injury prone for me to start, im happy to bring in some injury prone players late as I can have a 7th good cover, but to start when covering with a rookie is too risky for me.
Rance is a KPP who is consistent, but also under a injury concern
Laird is consistent and was impacted by concussion last year and is worth his price

jvalles69

Totally tempted by Touhy...  ;D

I like Shaw's potential to blow the opposition away if he gets a fast start, the others can wait.
