Do we love the player as an option or do we just love him as a man?

To me as a supercoach option this year i think its a massive trap and our visions are being clouded by our love for the great man and the fairytale dogs season last year, hear me out

other than last year, 3 games 103 average, hes never cracked the 100 average in his career and only passed the 90 mark 3 times, the best being 99 in 2013 and one of these seasons cam all the way back in 08. the other being 91 in 2015

also at his age and coming off an a serious knee injury i just dont see him being a viable option

So to the people that have selected him so far and the ones that are set on him im curious to the reasoning, is it to be a keeper or as a pricey cash cow/stepping stone?

Returnin ACL players average well below career averages, no from me.

Defenders who can average 87-92 are good enough for D5-6 particularly early in the year.
He's priced at 72.
He's not a 72 defender. He's not a 100 defender either...but if he allows you to get Gawn over Grundy or Danger over Treloar he can be justified.
I think he'll make some money and average 85-90ish. If luxury trades allow at the end of the year he can be moved on or if a Shaw, Docherty type fall dramatically and he rises a bit a sideways trade would also be a win in my book.

Disagree, especially this year. You'll easily find 6-10 defenders over 92 and possibly even 95 this year. Agree that it is acceptable but won't win you games, especially when Bob misses games - I'm expecting in the 3-5 range. Bear in mind I see him going 85, having to fielding a rookie now brings his average to a 75-80 and that's 15-20 points a game you're losing. So the question now is, will Gawn go 15-20 points over Grundy? Danger 15-20 over Treloar? Would be close but I'd hedge my bet on premium defender / lower tier premium. Especially considering you're most likely gonna squeeze in Gawn and Danger anyway.

i reckon youve hit the nail on the head, for another 90ish k more you can get up to a williams/mcdonald type. if i did need to go a player in the 300k range so i could get up to a danger/gawn id be swaying towards roughy type (averaged between 95 and 10 in his last 5 years playing) or even a harley bennel. or if bob was in the D4 or lower position straight down to a rookie and spend the cash elsewhere

Hippo

Gee if Malceski could do it coming back from injury then why can't Murphy

Age is just a number, class is permanent.

Would have to look the Bob of old during the PS games, but you can't just write him off this early

Grufflez

Your looking at 94+ from your D6 this year.
Bob could barely cut it before the injury when he was playing some really good footy.
If you're happy STARTING your D6 and averaging 85 go for it.

GoLions

I was originally all over him, cooled down now though. Still might start him depending on many good def rookies are available round 1.

Not all do

Goddard
2006 ave: 106
2007: ACL
2008 ave: 103

Gray
2011 ave: 91
2012: ACL
2013 ave: 91 unsubbed

Hayes
2010 ave: 103
2011: ACL
2012 ave: 102

But agree there is a risk in starting him and I'm not going near him

Not many (if any) have come back from an ACL at 34 years old.  Most would have given up on the game!

quinny88

He plays a loosish defender. He relies on his kicking. His class and skill won't have gone anywhere.
He's been in and out of my side. Not in at the moment though

jfitty

Bob was in my initial side when Supercoach opened, but have cooled off a little myself.

Might wait and see how the Doggies defenders are looking before trading one or more in. Boyd, Johannisen and Bob are all fantastic ball users, plus guys like Biggs and Wood find the pill a bit back there as well. However you'd assume one or more will be a top 10 defender.

Not sure who the stand out(s) will be yet, so perhaps look at one for the first backline upgrade.

Yeah, no dogs in backline for me.  Wait and see who gets what role and scoring.  With R11 bye, can upgrade to a doggie in R12
