The only worry with Murphy is that Bolton had him playing more of an outside role due to his ball use. Carlton lack guys with polished disposal, something Murphy has in spades. This is a key piece of info from an article written about him over the week

Turns out there was another reason for this.

QuoteLingering shoulder concerns meant Murphy played more of an outside midfielder role early last season, but having overcome those issues, Murphy flagged not only more time as an inside midfielder, but also rests closer to goal.

"Certainly this year I've done a lot of training inside so I'll play a lot inside mid, filter on a wing, and then also go deep forward as well," Murphy told RSN on Tuesday.

Murphy injured his shoulder in round 21 2015 against the Dees. He had no-preseason last year and was in doubt heading into the Richmond game round 1. He ended up killing it in that game which probably masked the fact he was still not quite right.

He had a huge drop in contested possessions last year which hurt his scores, normally when he would have a 25 touch game he was looking at 110 minimum. I have brought this up a few times but I figured it had to do more with having Cripps, Curnow, Graham, Kerridge and the like and no outside ball users. I honestly didn't think it was them trying to protect the shoulder.

At his price I think he has to be locked in.

As each day gets closer to the season, I get more and more inclined to dump Beams and bring in Murph

I think Beams has a bit of an Adam Cooney vibe going right now. His knee worries me, the fact they have publicly acknowledged this worries me even more. If he he plays some footy in the pre-season I would probably still stick with him knowing that he is capable of being a top 10 mid at his price. I'll basically have to weigh up if it's worth taking the risk and he flops vs not starting him at all and he explodes.

I'm picking both.

Picking neither. Big risks for 90-100 points, compared to gun and rookie

90-100 points? Beams could go 120 if he stays on the park, and Murphy probably between 105-110. I just have Beams for now, but it's bloody tempting to double up with Murph. It's also bloody tempting to go with neither and bring in JPK though :P

Interesting comments in this thread. Hadn't read it till now because Murphy holds zero interest for me.
He will average in the 100-105 range IMO. simply not worth it. Not enough to be a keeper and forget about him as a stepping stone as LS said if he made enough cash you'd want to keep him anyway.
Beams on the other hand could go 120. Well worth the risk. He gets tagged and dominates. Murphy gets tagged and people debate it... because he hasn't scored like Beams.
Forget Murphy's season where he averaged 118... that was eons ago and as has been pointed out, Judd copped the attention back then allowing Murphy to a free run.
Cripps is the one at Carlton to get if anyone because he's a beast... can't be tagged out of it either... shame for Murphy.

Mat's really made some very very good points.

Beams and his knee does remind me of Cooney and his. And the fact he will NEVER be over it. 44 games in 4 years, meh

Plus, Cripps is THAT good that I can't see why he couldn't play a Judd role (which he does) leaving Murph to get back to his best?

It's a very close call for me atm and I'm only choosing one, with MM the man (hate him but can't ignore him)

go JPK

I currently have neither though Beams tempts me more than Murph. I don't see him going much higher than 105 at best, which would make him an M7-8 target - ok if you want to start him picking him to fill that slot, but I'd rather take a punt on a rookie who might turn into the Cripps of 2017, and lock in guys I believe can go 110+. Looking at the top 25 priced mids, I don't see Murph comfortably leapfrogging anyone, and I wouldn't pick him to out do the top 20... Beams is someone who could, if he stays on the park.

Both has-beens. Beams is the new Higgins while Murphy can't football without Judd next to him. Spend the extra and get JPK since he'll be the #1 scorer in 2017.

Mat0369

I should listen to my own advice a bit more. I didn't end up starting him because I needed the bloody cash.

meow meow

I've got him but I'm not getting too excited just yet. He only played Richmond.

Hawka

Talked my room mate and league rival out of getting him, he mad hahaha

eaglesman

To those that picked him well
Done. He looked really shRp out there.
