Anyone getting tempted by Steele?

He was in and out of my side 12 months ago as a breakout contender, but I reckon this might be the year

Not a lot of great forward options this year, and at only 347k I think he can go 90+ which is good enough for fwd this year, and his DPP is handy too

Don't generally like mid pricers and breakout contenders, but at his price and the lack of forwards I reckon it would be an easy fix if it doesn't work out

This is the year to pick your Steele & Heeney types but I'd just want to see more evidence before taking the plunge. One preseason game against a junk Blues side isn't enough.

His score today doesn't influence my decision, but it does make me think about him

Like I mentioned, I was close to starting him last year but he was never going to get his chance to shine in such a deep GWS side but now at the Saints I think he has much more room to stamp his authority as one of their main mids

Was a beast as a junior too, so it's not a reaction to one score vs a crappy Blues team - I really think he can become a keeper, but at the same time I just hate starting mid pricers unless they are proven fallen prems due to injury

Hmmm, will give it some serious thought

Is he even best 22? Not being funny but legit I have my doubts. Scanning the team list I would say all these boys capable of running through mids or be in competition with him elsewhere.
Steven
Armitage
Ross
Montagna
Newnes
Acres
Dunstan
Weller
Billings
Gresham
Then...
Freeman
Stevens

If he starts round 1 n plays a bad one the saints have depth to drop him and play Someone in form. Saints quality emerging side.
Too risky at his price

Mat0369

I'm only looking at Dahl, Macrae and Roughy in the forward line. The rest can wait and I'd rather go with rookies and use the cash on other lines.

Are there 3 secure rookies And 2 cash generating bench options ? I can't see them

Eagles let's be realistic here.

Steven Armo Ross Dunstan are your on ballers. Newnes Acres Stevens Steele outside mids high half forwards.

Billings more forward but probably some mid time. Gresh Weller will play permanent forward. Freeman won't play.

Joey will play +1 across half back. Steele will definitely play

Sorry I'm not sure he is a definitely best 22. This taken from another site

Geary Dempster Gilbert
Savage Carlisle newnes
Ross Steven Montagna
Weller Riewoldt billings
Membrey Bruce mccartin
Hickey armitage Acres
Longer Roberton dunstan Gresham

Left out currently steele Stevens Webster Nathan brown.

So looking at that. Montagna apparently going to half back Riewoldt playing high/wing because they won't play 3 talls across full forward line which prob moves membrey to chf or out of the side?
Is longer going to play or Bruce pinch hit?

Was I really unrealistic to question it?

All I know is I wouldn't be risking picking a mid pricer unless he is a certainty to be picked every week and quite frankly the job security of popular midpricers such as omeara swallow Heeney Roughead and Sandilands eclipses that of steeles.

Hoggyz_a_legend

That team loses credibility for not having Brown in it. We can't play Hickey, Linger, Bruce and McCartin. Imo it's Hickey or Longer. And Steele 100% gets in on form. From that team I'd be inclined to drop Gilbert or Savage. Our defense would be too overloaded with Carlisle, Brown, Dempster taking talls, Geary taking a small. And Gilbert, Roberton, Savage, Newnes, Montagna playing the more attcking roles.

Whether he's relevant? He'll avg around 80-85 imo so probs not at his price.

If one of Higgins or Roughead get the chop from my team for whatever reason he tops the list of replacements at the mid price he is.
Have only watched the first half of Carlton v St.K game this morning but he looks good.

Some really good discussion about this lads :)

Fair point Eagles and tbh I didn't even really consider that because I just assumed he was best 22, but when you look at their list you're right he might not be, although I think he will personally

Mat, I like the idea of just having those 3 but again like Eagles raised I cannot see how you are going to find 5 rookies to fill out the line. I think we have to have 4 starters in the forwards at a minimum this year

I hate mid price break out contenders, especially after the epic fails that ruined my season last year but the problem I have is that this year I can't see anymore than 2-3 forwards capable of going 100+ so I think 90+ is the goal this year

With the lack of top end starters, and lack of rookies meaning we need to start 4 at least, this is why I think we need to look at these mid priced options, because I don't want to spend up big here

Options a plenty

HF:  Billings, Bruce, Gresham
FF:  Weller, McCartin, Membrey

Int:  Ross, Steele, Dempster, Stevens
Emerg: Dunstan, Webster, McKenzie

I posted this team back in October. Still see it as best 22...and he fits in that, there's a place for him if he delivers.

Yup I see that team being a better mix that the one I posted and to be honest I would have posted something similar myself but wanted to use another sites team to not have it look like I was being biased.

The main point I am getting at here is in my opinion when you pick a mid pricer you have to be 100% sure he is best 22 and for them to have next to no risk for omission due to form/strong club depth.

There is no way in the earth someone could guarantee he ticks both those boxes based on a look at that team.

This is spot on for me, except imo Dunstan has shown he deserves a spot. So Out: Stevens, In: Dunstan.

I like Steele.  Had him in my initial teams and has re-emerged now.  The tackles are very promising.  Without them I'd have very little interest.

Price is an interesting one... but I'm comfortable starting him and evaluation him on his first 2 performances.  If he plays well, I'm happy to back him in.  If he plays poorly I can either go up or down depending what presents itself.

Exactly what I mentioned earlier. At his price, he would be easy to trade to Nank or Ryder for example

We always allow ourselves a few correctional trades first up anyway, so I think it's worth the risk

Just the JS which is a little concerning, but I think he is in the 22

You're looking for a total of 5 guys from this list

Weideman
Smedts
Hoskin-Elliot
Taranto
Wagner
McCarthy
McCluggage
Knight
Ainsworth
White***
Thomas
Menzel
Turner
Bowes
Stewart
Florent
Simpkin
Schoenmakers
Gallucci
Black
Hardwick
Butler
Durdin
McKay
Miles
Pickett
LeBois
Eddy
Begley
Cameron
Daicos

A few of those guys are pricier and personally I wouldn't be picking a Weideman or Smedts taking into account their price and scoring potential, but I see a ton of guys ready to potentially line up round 1.

Bully

Missing Brandan Parfitt, looking good again this week.
