Read an interesting article about the new ruck rule change for this year

The Bont averaged 107.7 in 2016, but of that average he averaged 3.85 ppg from hitouts, so with that now no longer being an option for him his average would have been 103.8

Does that sway anyone from starting him?

That being said, he won't be able to go 3rd man up anymore, but that does mean he will be down on the ground now instead and could probably just win possessions from the rucks hitout now and recoup those lost points anyway

Thoughts?

he's a lock can only get better

I'll be picking the Bont this year, reckon he's tracking in a very similar manner to Nat Fyfe.

Good player for sure. Fyfe far superior mark but bont has better disposal.

If I had to pick one I'd pick Fyfe every time though.

Umpires to crack down on him throwing the ball instead when in congestion(like the rest of the dogs midfield) instead of handballing it hopefully this year though.

Averaged 110 for the last 16 games after a slow start.  That was his 3rd season in the AFL, he's not going to get worse..

Yep, and he's a big game player. Very few players scored more 140+ scores, Bont had 5 which is a good guide as to his ceiling. All he needs to do is eliminate the 70's and he's a top 10 mid.

Spewing his % of ownership is so high

Was hoping it would be under 10%, but that isn't happening by the looks of things

Currently in my side since SC opened, but not 100% locked just yet

_wato

Don't see him going above 105.

was always going to be high.

My concern with Bont he benefited from the dogs injuries and whether he can keep it up when all return is debateable.

Southstorm

Great player, but safer options. Would rather run the risk of starting proven 110-120ppg players and trading a hot Bont in later

It's enough uncertainty for me not to start him.

At his price id much rather take the safe option for an extra 40k.
Undoubtably he has the potential to be one of the best SC players out there, but he still had 9 games under 100 last year and for me this is too many to be worth considering starting when you have so many other options that are more consistent.

So from my thoughts id have 2 options

Treloar @ 604,500
Missed 1 games in 2 years
3 straight years averaging over 105
Scored under 100 15 times over the last 2 years
Scored over 120 13 times over the last 2 years

Bont @ 586,100
Missed 2 games in 2 years
Only 1 year averaging over 105
Scored under 100 23 times over the last 2 years
Scored over 120 15 times over the last 2 years

So id be confident in saying Treloar will average 110 and that Bontempelli is likely to average 110. Essentially you pay an extra 18k for a much more proven premium who has less variance in scores and less risk in being able to hit that 110 mark.

Nat Fyfe went from 106 to 122 in his 5th season. Bont is in his 4th. Not sure if this is that important considering Bon'ts backend to 2016 was elite. I still think he's a worthy bet.

Here's where I'm at at the moment

He's 586k, so already priced a full prem more or less

I think he will take things to another level this year, but is he going to average 115+ from the get go? That's the question I need to answer, but let's say he does, he will only go up about 30-50k so it's not exactly costing a lot from start price

On the other hand, if he pushes 110 then you've got what you've paid for, and even though that's very good for M8, I want the mids I start the year to be Top 10 keepers all year

I was all over him initially, but this, as well as his high % of ownership are swaying me to start someone else

Might as well spend the measly 20-30k more and get a guaranteed 112+ starter, is what I'm thinking

If Beams/Murphy doesn't turn out, can always easily upgrade them to Bont if he's going ballistic

Exactly this. I have started my sc preseason late so maybe this Bont selection has been a crowd following one in order to have such high ownership but I honestly can't believe what I am seeing. It's dead set Insanity to justify his selection over a similar priced proven lot of guns who have averaged higher for years. Isn't remotely in the frame for me
