Is Trengove 2016 the Gawn of 2015?

My head says getting mid pricers is madness. Heck I started Trent McKenzie this year. BUT....

Gawn, after meandering through his career at Round 10 last year became first ruck and took off. I thought hard about drafting him in at a cheap price in 2015, didn't, and it cost. NOW...

I'm not suggesting Jackson Trengove will be as good as Gawn. But I think even though he's a mid pricer (294k) this is a unique pick as now first ruck for Port. Look at prices for rucks and most half decent ones get to 400k+, really good ones 500k+. Trengove is also at that juicy 25 years old, which seems to be the time big guys flourish. Stats suggest rucks just score points and it's not like there's a plethora of backs killing it each week that I'd be leaving out. However I do have a philosophy of not chasing points so to get him I'd have to think he's a keeper. A risk, but sometimes you have to take them.

Thoughts?

Doesn't win taps, that's the problem. Won't get 13 contested possessions every week so I expect him to be up and down. Might make a quick 100k but won't be a keeper.

He was a Back/Ruck when he first started out.

He had like 10 clearences, pretty impressive stuff! Roves his own ball, gets possessions. I don't think his hitouts will be overly important, his possession count will be.

One game lol
However this is the best comment so far. Not worth it. Fill your teams with proven guns. Maybe worth a look in draft if you have a free bench spot or weak backs, not in the salary cap game though

I wanted to pick Gawn up last year and the Melbourne mob called me crazy, it was the one time the FF crew put in some stinker advice (not pointing the finger by the way).

In any case I corrected last year's fiasco by picking up Gawn this year, now at 646k he's looking like a bargain.

Is Mabiour Chol 2019 the Gawn of 2016?

benny_fraz

He wont be the Gawn of 2015 but can be a Blicavs type who gets roughly 10-15 hitouts, 15-20 possesions and a bunch of tackles per week

the year stef martin made his return and was priced at around 200K. i brought him in after 1 game.

was chasing overall low amount of trades and took a huge risk. it payed off finishing very high for the year and big stef averaging 100

I did the same

Martin had at least averaged 86 over a 21 game season and was priced at 200k

trengove prior to this game had gone 100+ 4 times out of 113 games. with 3 of them sub 110 and his best ever 120.

this is a big no.

If you wanted a ruck you pick currie last week at 160k.

who could match or beat trengove

Trengove is a Defender only in SuperCoach anyway. Which is why he hasn't scored big at all in his career, he's been a lockdown defender.

He's now playing 1st Ruck.

Still wouldn't be getting him in SC though. Lobbe will come back eventually and he won't be as successful against a better team.

HappyDEZ

Firstly. Speak of Trengove in a fantasy forum. Has the world gone mad? lol
Secondly. As a Port man I love the Trengove Ruck move. With Jonas, Hombsch, Alipate & Trengove all in our best 22 we have usually played them all back 6. At least one too many for ball use & rebound purposes. Lobbe was not giving us enough of a contest & Dougal is still too green. Enter Jackson. Killing 2 birds with one stone.
Last but not least. As a defender I don't think it is out of the question to pick him up. Injury would be my biggest concern. I think he will average 80SC minimum as 1R. That's pretty good. With potential to go 85-90 which is not that far off a keeper & certainly a solid D7. He isn't exactly rookie priced tho but a decent SC score is guaranteed as is his JS. Obviously 25 disp & 13 clearances is well above par but I think 15 hit outs will easily be improved upon & nobody is expecting 116SC from him every week. So, barring injury, he maybe a decent $ grab for someone like Yeo.
