Brisbane Lions ruckman Stefan Martin could play this weekend after Steven May hit

Brisbane Lions coach Justin Leppitsch said he was satisfied with the tribunal's decision to suspend Gold Coast Suns defender Steven May for five matches on Tuesday night, after his heavy hit on Lions ruckman Stefan Martin.

"I think it was done professionally and I think most people in the media who [actually] put a number out there were pretty close to the end result; that's pretty consistent with what has happened in the game," he said.

"These are things for the game [to decide], not me as coach. It's about eliminating [head-high contact] from the game.

"It could have been us on the receiving end; it could have been anybody. Once the action stopped, it's all about Stef's welfare us from the game forward, it has nothing to do with us at all, apart from that."

Martin has passed all concussion tests this week and trained with the main group on Thursday. Leppitsch said provided he was cleared by doctors, he was likely to take his place in the line-up against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.

Leppitsch revealed that Martin, a law student, had been sitting in on a murder trial during the week.

"All week he's like, 'I'm fine, I'm fine.' Actually he's doing his uni at the moment, he's been sitting in a courtroom, on a murder trial, so that's a good sign that mentally he's with it at the moment and he's OK.

"He's in good spirits. He's just got to get through the training session today."

The Lions are set to be further buoyed by the return of captain Tom Rockliff, who has been sidelined by a calf injury he sustained against North Melbourne in round two.

Sounds as though he will be good to go...

I laugh at all this talk about him being fine to continue his law study... and now its on a MURDER TRIAL... give me a break, its not like he's the Judge.
What's that got to do with his ability to play a world class, high level, contact sport??...

IMHO, if he plays, that's terrible player welfare management on the Lions behalf.

What is the best current evidence regarding concussion and the timing of resuming playing?

Seems a lot of people here know, so please show me.

If the medicos at Brisbane are any good at all, then they will be full bottle on the evidence regarding post concussion management of elite athletes, the testing, Stef's results of the tests and will not allow him to play if they are concerned.

For the record, he is in my SC team and I have no cover.

Agree, though I am not qualified to assess his state of health;  from a risk management perspective and the continuing understanding of long term health risks from contact sport it is difficult to understand the upside for him in playing this weekend.

This is the same medical team that looked after Justin Clarke?

They are being conservative.

I'm guessing you don't have Martin in your team by your comments? If he passes all medical/physical tests and is deemed fit to play by the Lions then that is good enough for me. Who are we to judge, they are the experts.

Yeah after Browny, Goose, and now Clarke, there's no way we'll risk him unless we're 100% confident that he's fit to play.

Teams won't even reveal much either, you'd think he'd be named. Just a matter of whether or not he makes the final side 90 mins before the match!

LordSneeze

Yep he will be named and given until the last minute.

Spot on, don't have him. Just entering into the topic of the thread.

All I'm saying is that 1 week off seems to be the norm, whatever the circumstances / medical / physical test results etc etc.

I bet of all the players that missed the following week, pretty much all of them said they felt right to go... isn't that the nature of the beast...?

Ringo

Doctors will have the final say and they will be making their decision tonight.  For information Stef completed all training drills today as well.  And may surprise I do not have Stef in my SC team.

This has been a great thread. Proud to have been a part of it.

My highlight - Slashers' comment about the murder trial.

Pure gold.  ;D  ;D

Haha, know who's also 'sitting in' on a murder trial?

The defendant

And I'm guessing he/she migh not be 'fine'

He's named with McStay, Mayes and Evans as their emergencies.

He plays.

Will not be 100% satisfied till the final test been conducted.  Remember Walker went OK in the ruck so with none named on emergency not a 100% guarantee
