Only 2 guns in defence?

All pre-season the defenders have been the biggest headache. Is it madness to consider the following structure of:
2 x gun def
7 x gun mid
2 x gun ruck
4 x gun fwd

That gives 15 keepers and rolls the dice in defence. I look at rookie defender options:
M. Brown (Ess)
Hartley
McDonald-Tipungwuti
Broad
S Collins
K Collins
Cowan (now with Thurlow injured)
Bonner
Tucker
Adams

Is this madness? I can't make a case for so many backs including B Smith, Simpson, Rance, Bartel etc

15 guns in one team.... that cannot be true
Please name them

Going light down back is fine and what most are doing, but you can't field a rookie at D3 - that's just a recipe for donuts and disaster

Slotting in a mid pricer at D3 is as light as I would go

Def: Laird, McGovern
Mid: Fyfe, GAJ, Sloane, Rocky, Duncan, Libba, Viney
Ruck: Natanui, Gawn
Fwd: Dusty, Barlow, Green, Hall

Still plenty of cash leftover. For mine, McGovern and Duncan absolutely prepared to back. I believe Libba is a keeper. Viney mildly confident. Greene and Hall shaky I'll admit

2 premiums and 1 or 2 midpricers depending on how solid the rookies look come round 1 is the way my defence is shaping up at the moment. Only 12 keepers at this stage which is a bit of a worry.

I rate your advice.... what do you think of Sheridan?

What about 2 x guns and 2 x midpricers and 4 x rookies

E.g. Heater, Bartel, Aish, Weitering, Brown, Hartley, (Collins, Broad)

Something like this would work better IMO, I'd give up Aaron Hall and bring in one of the many value picks down FWD

Seems to be quite popular and if he has another strong showing in a near full strength Freo side he has to be considered

Timtim's suggestion is popular too

At this stage I'm avoiding the mid pricers and going with 3 prem defenders, Dea at D4 followed by 4 rookies. Could change, but for now I like this balance

LordSneeze

From the rookies you have listed I could make an argument for 5 of them to play R1.

Of which only 4 I feel would actually be worth picking.

Ricochet

Atm the moment I've gone two guns + 2 who are borderline premo/breakout contenders (not midpricers).

DEF has certainly been the hardest line
