Hi all,

I really need some advice from you guys regarding the defensive line as I feel like I'm lacking points in this area. Any advice and tips are greatly appreciated.

My back are:

H. Shaw, E. Yeo, B. Smith, M. Dea, C. Byrne and M.Brown(Ess)

I'd say most people are going cheap in defence. Could be quite a few rookies that play round 1, and also a number of cheaper guys who a lot of coaches are willing to take the risk on. Plus, guys like McVeigh/Boyd are risks themselves as to whether they will play round 1 (McVeigh) and play out an entire season (Boyd).

Mine is   K Kolodjashnij,   S Docherty,   B Smith,   M Brown,   M Brown,   N Broad,            //  S Durdin,   K Collins

very cheap,  some names are that only, but gee I make up points elsewhere.
i.e.  Mids       N Fyfe,   S Pendlebury,   G Ablett,   R Gray,   T Rockliff,   T Liberatore,   B Crouch,  C Mills,
                                                                                                                             //  J Gresham,   S Kerridge,   B Keays
Guess it just depends on how you set up elsewhere and which rookies stand up during the NAB.  Best of luck mate.    ;)

Like always, the best value is in the Mids, as long as you have one premium/semi-premium defender you'll be fine.

Byod a better pick than Shaw imo saves u 40k and likely both miss 2-3 games. Byod should start better over first 7-8 rounds.
Yeo seems good because of extra midfield time with WC's defenders fit again.
Be careful with Brody smith, will play off HB were he scored 93 in all All Australian year, if he doesnt return to AA form???
Matt Dea i recommend reading the Essendon  big footy boards, its a pretty mixed review and at 180k needs more consideration than he would if he was 117k.

Why is Shaw likely to miss 2-3 games?

Most people hold grudges I guess, even after Shaw was the messiah in defence last year. To be fair, last season was the first time he's all played 22 since 2007. Barring his first season, he's averaged 19 per year since he started, and has only averaged 18 games in the last 5 seasons. Statistically, it's likely he'll miss 3-4 games this season.

I'm confident Shaw is over his 'brain-fades', which means the likelihood of him missing games is about the same as Houli/Rance/TMac etc imo

Yeah, agree. Everyone keeps reverting back to those even though he hasn't one since he moved to GWS. He played every game last season and missed games the year before because of concussion from that sickening clash with Tippett.

MC

Yeah he doesn't often get 'injured' in the traditional sense. Concussions/incidental injuries and suspensions have been the major cause thus far.

I don't even want to start shaw but I feel like I have to because of the lack of other safe options. I don't think there is any hope in hell he will average 112 again, more likely for around 100 but who else is there that will be able to go 100+?
McVeigh, my first choice has been injured all preseason. Boyd will 100% be rested throughout the season, simmo and Bartel in my side at D2,D3 but are more likely For low to mid 90s.
Any other D1 contenders?

kilbluff1985

quinny i think Simmo could have a really good year under Bolton's positive attitude

an interesting thought process for me i think there is a good chance Dea, Brown, Hartley and Tippa could all play round one for Essendon if they do would you consider picking all 4 with 2 on the bench

I don't see why not. I won't be going with Dea as he's a bit expensive for what he's likely to score but having 4 bombers wouldn't be an issue to me

Has been training with the mid group and is running pb time trials at 31! Have a read:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-02-14/whos-burning-the-track-this-pre-season

" Kade Simpson, 31, is running personal best times and says he has enjoyed his best pre-season since his mid-20s. The defender, who will be out of contract at season’s end, says he is in the best shape he has been for four or five years and has barely missed a training session."
