im hearing max gawn is tearing the intraclubs to shreds could be a good POD ordinary price but could be one of the great break outs of 2016

FactHunt

At $550K this horse has bolted...
Can play, just doesn't fit into my 2 ruck slots.

neither, just getting some opinions would be a risk but huge reward

Big Mac

Kind of already had his breakout last year

Took the number 1 ruck spot, improved his tap work tremendously, one of the few ruckmen capable of taking contested marks. All reports are that his tank has improved heaps this pre season too, which is an area that held him back a bit last year

He's still young though, and I think it will take a year or two to see the same consistency from him that you get with Goldy/Martin/NN

Those 3 still nudge ahead of him imo

Who's he rucking against in intra club matches? You would hope he's dominating.
The guy can score but he's not a top tier ruckman and not worth selection at that price

PiPies

Agree with others he pretty much broke out last year, one of the few trades that worked for me last season. With only 10-50k difference between him and the likes of Nic Nat, Sauce and Martin I think they are safer picks. If he was 100k cheaper be worth the punt at R2 I reckon, he smashed out a few huge scores last season.

fanTCfool

If he had forward DPP again I would be very keen

What are people's thoughts on Gawn now that he's had a solid preseason, 111 vs St Kilda, 138 vs Port, 112 vs Dogs. I've checked Melbourne's draw and it seems pretty reasonable as far as the ruck competition is concerned. I've had Nic Nat in my side all year but I'm think seriously about a switch.

Here's his opponents in the early stages -

Rd1 GWS (Mumford will be a big ask but he's ageing and Max is just hitting his straps).
Rd2 Ess (Leuey will hardly be match fit, can see Gawn destroying him)
Rd3 North (Goldy yikes, but did ok last year scoring 80)
Rd4 Coll (Grundy is decent but Gawn is better, 98 & 104 last year)
Rd 5 Rich (Maric is officially toasted, should be easy pickings for Gawn)
Rd 6 St Kilda (Hickey and chalk in a ton, 111, 110, 118 last 3 scores)
Rd 7 Gold Coast (Tom Nicholls or Currie, think Gawn will triumph)
Rd 8 Bulldogs (An ageing Minno, will be interesting but Gawn for me)
Rd 9 Brisbane (Stef Martin so will ton up more than likely)
Rd 10 Port (Lobbe will be crucified, much like the practice game)

No Sandilands, Naitanui, Jacobs until late in the year. I'm tempted, if the NAB Cup is anything to go by then Gawn is the form ruckman of the competition. Not overly cheap but has the potential to push 110 this year.

I've changed my opinion on him big time! The hype is real and I think he could definitely be a great pick.
Tempted to go Goldy/Gawn but sticking to Goldy/NicNat coz I'll kick myself if nicnat goes huge and I took him out late

Here's a brief analysis of Nic Nat's draw.

vs Brisbane (80)
vs Hawks (64 & 100)
vs Freo (77)
vs Rich (146)
vs Syd (103)
vs Coll (100)
vs Geel (152)  Note: record against Zac Smith was 73
vs St Kilda (103 & 133)
vs Port (77) Note: Ryder suspended
vs GC (75) Note: score against Nicholls

The opening 3 rounds will tell the story, if Nic Nat gets away to a flyer then I think he'll have a good year.

Yeah not all that impressive but I'm not picking NicNat based on his history but more on what I know he can capable of.
I expect him to attend more centre bounces than ever, he's had a good pre season and if he can just add a couple more marks around the ground and hit the scoreboard a little more often I think he can easily push up to a 110+ player

I switched from Nic Nat to Gawn recently based on Gawn's first 2 NAB games and their draws this year. The ruckman Gawn plays twice v Nic Nat plays twice are poles apart. The 10k was a nice bonus.

+1. Hope it doesn't come back to bite me.

sammy123

got hom locked his NAB was very good

RaisyDaisy

I'm a big fan, and I'm not saying he can't push 110 but his 3 nab opponents were absolute rubbish

He does look to be fit and firing though. A legitimate pick, but I'm sticking with Goldy NicNat
