I noticed this a few weeks ago, this is mostly your own fault though. If you come in the bottom for a few weeks and SAVE your gold, instead of splashing them on packs, you can specifically target players you want and buy them at the auction. I know you feel like you want instant impact and it is hard to resist, but it was not the best move. Selling players instead of keeping and upgrading them may also slow you down.
Or you could have targeted weeks like bronze or silver weeks to try and do well there. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get right back into it. Ask Nrich, who probably had the WORST team by a country mile a few weeks ago.

I've seen FF hoard gold for about 5 weeks now, no one has been onto it. Then he just picks off an auction every fortnight and slightly improves his team.

Also specifically in relation to Nige, I'm not sure you'd want to call your team mediocre considering you've been one of the more luckier players so far....I'd still rate your team in the top 4 teams.

There is plenty of tactics to this game, those playing the long game will always come up trumps.
