Just  commencing a thread for action and discussion on Essendon players suspensions.

Please comment which options you think and also add suggestions to it and they will be put in the OP here.

- Once we know who the top up players are, teams will draft replacements only from those players who then will be delisted at the end of the season.

- Teams can draft from both the top up players and the leftovers from the rookie draft, who then will be delisted at the end of the season and those on a AFL list go back into the player pool.

- Top up players cannot be traded out of their team

- A mini draft to be done, the order to be worked out using a combination of ladder position from last season, player quality(includes captain option) and averages, how badly the loss of the player/players affect the team which includes losing your number 1 ruck etc.  Draft order be published in next post.

- Coaches are free to not partake in the mini draft if they feel they have enough depth to cover their missing players for this season but need to be aware of possible injury repercussions.

This section for further discussion to resolve
1) Timing of minidraft
Minidraft to take place as soon as 10 Top up players confirmed
or
To take place immediately at conclusion of NAB Cup after seeing all

2 Retention of Top Up Players to replace Retiring Players
Do we allow franchises to retain a top up player so long as they remain on an AFL list  to replace a retiring player
or
Stick to the mindraft rules of all top up players reverting to the pool.

3 Minidraft Rule
Top up players must be like for like.

Quick correction Ringo, Hibberd is at the Werewolves and not the Hurricanes ;)

I think it's probably going to have to be top-up players as well as leftover pool players in the mini-draft as otherwise I don't think there will be enough to go around (only Essendon are allowed top up players, and not Port, Melbourne, St Kilda or Bulldogs).

I don't think top-up players should be allowed to be traded.

Everyone will have their own opinion on what the mini-draft order should be so happy to go with your opinion Ringo as admin.

I don't really have a strong opinion as to when the mini-draft is held.

I just did some averages and taking into account positions and stuff as well...I'd have the order something like this

Dyson Heppell  Liverpool Rams
Jobe Watson    Huddersfield Hawks
Brent Stanton  Hebden Bridge Hedgehogs
Cale Hooker      Wrexham Knights
Paddy Ryder    Blackpool Bunnies
Michael Hibberd  Winchester Werewolves
Ben Howlett     Birmingham Dragons
Stewart Crameri Bradford Badgers
Travis Colyer     Wrexham Knights
Jake Carlisle       Blackpool Bunnies
Heath Hocking  Blackpool Bunnies
Jake Melksham   Grope Lane Giants
Tom Bellchambers Birmingham Dragons
David Myers        Winchester Werewolves
Angus Monfries  Hastings Hurricanes
Tayte Pears       Birmingham Dragons

Agree with Rusty, don't think top-up players should be traded, but I'd also suggest we wait until after the 2nd trade period ends, as some people may still want some of these Bombers players if they either have depth to cover on a certain line, or are in a rebuild and happy to keep that player on their list for a year (e.g. if lets say Rams wanted to trade Heppell for another similar premium)

I also think top-ups should be from the same position that the player they are missing was in

Nige

I like Dave's rankings more. No way Ryder is worth more than Heppell.

Ringo

Reason I have Ryder first is that bunnies back up ruck to Ryder is Derrick only so that in my opinion should give them first choice in the draft given their finishing position last year as well.

This is why I suggested that you have to pick someone from the same position. So then it doesn't really matter where Ryder is prioritized, as long as it's above Belly.

kilbluff1985

the order looks about right to me

I'll also add that age shouldn't matter, as it's only a 1 year thing

Somewhat fair enough. No disrespect to SR, but I feel like coaches should make an effort to have a back up ruck that plays or has a good chance to play. Dave's suggestion of picking to replace the position seems fair in this scenario. Having first pick to get another mid doesn't make sense. If he's getting pick 1 purely because Ryder is a ruck, then he should be using it on a ruck.

E.g. I picked up Currie in trade period because I needed backup for Nicholls after he got injured in the finals last year. Also, in all honesty, everyone knew the Bombers players of 2012 were a decent chance of being suspended surely. If SR can pick the best top-up mid, I feel like it won't really make a difference as he still has that ruck position missing. So gotta have to replace with same position. I would obviously have to replace Crameri with a forward, even though I'd probably prefer a mid tbh.

had this idea for AXVIII SC

under the extreme circumstances in the best interest to keep the competition fair allow teams affected to trade there first 2016 draft pick

it has to be like for like if they lost a defender must trade in a defender and only if the banned player was best xv

I dunno, what I'm thinking is give teams until the end of the trade period to sort out any issues. E.g. with SR, having a quick look there's plenty of teams with 2-3 rucks who should all get game time. Any trades made to address Bombers suspensions won't cost any movements to either party involved.

Then after that, we can have a mini draft with the top up players, where draft order is decided by the worth of that player alone, ignoring all other factors except their scoring and position.

Thoughts?
