Lock. There is no reason not to start him if he is fit
I count at least 5. Gaz, Rocky, Libba, Crouch, and Danger (in terms of how it will affect him). Then also Pendles, Beams, Sloaney, and a few others. Can't see myself starting him at this point.
Yep will start those first 4, but Danger had his best season last year and is an unknown at a new club, i won't be starting him, not over Jelwood (if fit) anyway :P

I meant how Danger will impact Jelwood

oh yeah, that is clearly written there :P must have missed it. I see it being a positive thing, Jelwood will still get the tag sometimes but danger will certainly get the tag sometimes as well. Will have to wait and see though :P

If anything, Danger should see a lift in Jelwood. You'd expect players like Motlop to 'suffer' because of Danger's addition, doubt Joel will. Plenty of players score just as well in much more stacked midfields and arguably, Joel's scoring has historically suffered because he lacked help

What concerns me about Selwood is how he slackens off mid season in his scoring.  Look at his history especially from Round 15 onwards.

Here are his averages for Rds 15 - 23.
2015 106.8
2014 129.4
2013 137.4

He will  more than likely be my last mid upgrade due to his scoring potential after byes.

I wouldn't say historically he slacks off, he definitely did in '14 and '13, 2015 was just all round inconsistent and 2012-2009 he was pretty consistent for the whole season

Also 2013-2015 he was priced 630k-650k as opposed to this years 565k

As mentioned the biggest factor for me is the Danger inclusion, surely its going to draw attention away from Selwood.

If you have a look at Selwood's scoring history, he still dominated in the early days when GAJ was dominating the competition. GAJ went consecutive years of 130+ and Sel was still up at 110 in only his 3rd season, then backed up with 117 in his 4th. Injury-ravaged last year, and he still posted 105 in his worst season since he 'broke-out' and has a 7-season average of 115 since then!
Yes of course he's won a huge percentage of his games, and yes he didn't perform as well when Geelong were under the pump last year as a team, yet how many of us are brave enough to tip the Cats to miss finals this year with their inclusions...

just the fact he has a foot problem preseason means I want be starting him

this is the only reason he isnt in my team now, fully fit he is a lock but he isnt fully fit. So it makes it tough for me to pick him up over say Sloane.

I'll call it now, Cats won't make finals

I'm a pretty firm believer in that you don't build a team through trades and FA, you do it through the draft. You also need a team chemistry, to know how your team mates play, their tendencies and what goes through their head on the field. You can't get this over one pre-season. I think the way they have gone about this off-season it's going to backfire on them

Sydney? Buddy, Tippett, JPK, Mcglynn, Laidler, Shaw (their forward half is built on the free agency)

Hawks? Gunston, Gibbo, Burgoyne, Hale, Mcevoy

I see Geelong being quite successful next year, simply because they got Danger

The Swans didn't make all those changes in the one season and were actually struggling early in the  season they got Buddy in losing to GWS round 1 and didn't get rolling for a few weeks due to the lack of chemistry. Most of those Swans guys that they bring in were also fringe players on other teams lists and not established best 22 players at that point in time. The Swans put the development into JPK and McGlynn after they were traded by the Hawks, while I firmly believe Laidler was in our best 22 he was a delisted FA that no one else wanted.

Same deal with the Hawks, they didn't bring all those guys in during one year and weren't a dominant force until most of those guys had X amount of years playing together. In the 3 peat they made maybe one move a year. Year 1 was Lake, two was Big Boy and 3 was Chip.

Chemistry and stability is just as important to a team structure as talent. The Cats have tried to bring in 4 or 5 guys? That's a lot different to what the other teams did and they weren't a finals side last year either.

So about Joel Selwood....

He was back into running at Cats training today. Good sign for those planning on starting with him.
